The Italian Swimming Federation has published their roster for the 2021 European Short Course Championships, which will be held from November 2 to 7 in Kazan, Russia.

  • OLYMPIC EVENTS : finalist and semifinalist athletes in the individual events of the Olympic Games and/or finalists during the 2021 European Championships (long course) in Budapest. The athletes are qualified in the race in which they competed in the semifinal and/or final.
  • NON-OLYMPIC EVENTS: qualified athletes who are ranked first in the national rankings in the 50-meter pool of the 2021 season.

The roster includes three of the country’s four individual medalists from the Olympic Games: Nicholas Martinenghi (bronze, 100 breast), Gregorio Paltrinieri (silver, 800 free/bronze, 10km open water), and Simona Quadarella (bronze, 800 free). Quadarella was one of the country’s big winners at the last edition in 2019, winning the 400 and 800 freestyles.

Absent among that group is Federico Burdisso, who was the bronze medalist in the men’s 200 IM. He has returned to the United States to continue his collegiate career at Northwestern.

The country will also be without two key legs of their men’s 400 free relay that won silver at the Olympics: Santo Condorelli, who swam a prelims leg, and Manuel Frigo, who anchored the finals relay. They’ll also have to replace Burdisso on the 400 medley relay that won silver at the Olympics.

Among others not attending are the country’s most famous swimmer, Federica Pellegrini. She has already declared that the International Swimming League will be the end of her competitive swimming career, though Aqua Centurions’ surprise run to the Playoff round has extended that through November – which could have allowed her to swim at these championships.

The European Short Course Championships are one of the few major international sporting events that hasn’t been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic so far. The last edition was held in 2019, and the next will continue on schedule in November.

At the last edition in 2019, Italy finished 2nd on the medals table with 6 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals. Only Russia (13/5/4) won more.
