Indiana State Claims 11 of 16 Events In Win Over Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Indiana State claimed 11 of the 14 swimming events as the Sycamores swimming and diving team topped Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon, 187-113, inside the Jones Natatorium.

The Sycamores closed out the two-day road trip with back-to-back wins over Toledo (Friday) and Eastern Michigan (Saturday) to improve to 5-1 overall in dual meet action on the season.

“I’m very proud of how we handled the meet today and this weekend as a whole,” head coach Josh Christensen said. “We knew going in this was going to be a challenging couple of days and our attitudes, effort, and energy were just outstanding. We’re looking forward to getting back to work on Monday.”

The Sycamores claimed both relay wins in the meet, while Chloe Farro (50, 100 Free) and Erin Cummins (200, 500 Free) both recorded multiple individual wins on the afternoon. Sahara VisscherAli PearsonSophia Diaz, and Alexandria Cotter also picked up individual wins in the meet, while Daniela Orta Castaneda was Indiana State’s top diver on the boards on the afternoon.

Indiana State opened the meet taking first and third place overall in the 400-yard Medley Relay. The team of Visscher, Pearson, Kaleigh Kelley, and Farro touched first in 3:46.84, while Ella MoustgaardAlexa Szadorski, Diaz, and Kalli Agapios finished two spots back in 3:51.48.

Claire Parsons continued her run in the distance events as the sophomore was first to the wall in the 1000-yard Freestyle in 10:16.53. Gemma Dilks finished second in 10:24.14, while Rose Parsons rounded out the top three in 10:37.67.

The Sycamores took the top two positions in the 200-yard Free with Cummins (1:53.46) and Peyton Heagy (1:54.26) leading the pack in the event. Maria Saldana Riebeling was sixth in 1:56.02 with Trista Bullock rounding out the group in 1:59.91.

Visscher was first to the wall in the 100-yard Backstroke continuing a strong fall season by the freshman. She finished in 57.04 to take the title, while Cotter finished fourth overall in 58.68. Kate Reeves was sixth in 59.95 with Diruzza finishing in 1:00.40 to place seventh overall.

Pearson (1:03.90) and Szadorski (1:04.99) took the top two spots in the 100-yard Breaststroke to continue the Sycamores’ winning streak in the pool. Dorotea Bukvic was sixth overall in 1:09.02.

Diaz, Raine Boles, and Haley Halsall claimed the top three positions in the 200-yard Fly for the Sycamores. Diaz was first in 2:05.53, while Boles (2:05.61) and Halsall (2:07.10) took home the remaining podium spots in the event. Raz Harel rounded out the group in seventh in 2:11.64.

Farro was first to the wall in the 50-yard Freestyle in picking up her first win of the afternoon. The senior touched the wall in 55.71 to claim the event by over a full second. Agapios was fourth in 57.75, while Ash Saple (57.94) and Kelley (57.96) finished fifth and sixth respectively. Allie Barasch rounded out the Sycamores with 59.80 to claim eighth.

Orta Castaneda was Indiana State’s top diver in the 1M Springboard finishing with a six-dive score of 207.98. Lucia McDougall finished 10th with 183.30, while Brenna Woodruff took 11th with 172.95.

Farro (51.16) held off Visscher (52.41) to claim the Indiana State win in the 100-yard Freestyle event. Szadorski was fourth in 52.78, with Heagy placing fifth in the field in 53.63.

The Sycamores put three in the top four in the 200-yard Backstroke with Diruzza (2:07.27), Moustgaard (2:07.29), and Agapios (2:07.62) finishing second, third, and fourth in the event. Reeves was sixth in 2:11.12, while Bullock placed eighth in 2:14.90.

Cotter was Indiana State’s top finisher in the 200-yard Breaststroke as the senior touched the wall second overall in 2:22.26. Pearson was third in 2:23.21, with Bukvic placing fourth in 2:24.54.

Cummins held off Claire Parson to claim the individual win the 500-yard Freestyle event. The Sycamore sophomore touched the wall in 5:02.65 to top her teammate (5:03.97) by over a full second. Riebeling was fourth overall in 5:05.84, while Rose Parsons took sixth in the field in 5:16.45.

Diaz nearly completed the Fly sweep on the afternoon, but was unable to catch EMU’s Tristen Mina in the 100-yard event in taking second overall in 56.63. Kelley was third in 56.66 with Boles adding a fourth-place finish in 57.02. Harel (59.22) and Barasch (59.75) added top-eight finishes in the field.

Orta Castaneda led Indiana State with a seventh-place result in the 3M Springboard posting a score of 226.95. McDougall was eighth overall in 219.90.

Cotter claimed the win in the 400-yard IM as the senior topped the field in 4:25.24. Dilks was second overall in 4:29.69, while Bukvic added a fourth-place result in 4:38.22. Moustgaard (4:40.97) and Halsall (4:41.90) placed sixth and seventh respectively.

The Sycamores top two relay teams took the top two spots in the afternoon’s final 200-yard Freestyle Relay event. The top team of Farro, Kelley, Szadorski, and Agapios finished in 1:34.78, while the second team of Visscher, Boles, Pearson, and Heagy touched the wall in 1:36.58. The final relay team placed fifth overall in 1:39.46 with Cummins, Claire Parsons, Barasch, and Diaz taking on the field.
