Ikee & Sato Head To Japan Student Swimming C’ships Later This Week

97th JAPAN STUDENT SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 97th Japan Student Swimming Championships are set to get underway on Thursday of this week, with several Olympians ready to represent their schools in pursuit of the overall team trophy.

Leukemia survivor Rikako Ikee is among the racers comprising the Nihon University contingent, with the 21-year-old set to take on the women’s 50m free and the 100m butterfly event.

She’ll be joined by teammate Suzuka Hasegawa in the shorter fly event, while Hasegawa will also be competing in her stronger 200m fly distance.

Additional racers to watch on the female side include Natsumi Sakai, Nagisa Ikemoto, Rio Shirai, Miyu Namba, Chinatsu Sato, Waka Kobori and Runa Imai.

As for the men, 20-year-old Shoma Sato is a marquis athlete on which to keep an eye. The Keio University standout will be racing his pet breaststroke events this week.

200m fly silver medalist from this summer’s Olympic Games, Tomoru Hondais also expected to bring the heat, taking on his signature event in addition to the 400m IM.

Masahiro Kawane, Shinnosuke Ishikawa and Ippei Miyamato are also among the men’s competitors taking part in this 4-day affair.
