Courtesy Renata Sander, Minas Tenis club swimmer:
The II Metropolitan Tournament ended this Saturday at Minas Tenis Clube’s pool, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, with the Minas Tenis elite team making final preparations for the upcoming Maria Lenk Trophy.
Henrique Martins, who set himself among 2017 world’s top 10 times in the 100 fly with a 52.23. He also swam a 23.54 in the 50 fly, which would have ranked him first were he not already the world-leader in the event . He was also a runner-up in the 100m Freestyle (50.08) and third in the 200m Butterfly (2.07.54).
Missouri State University alumnus and multiple time MVC Swimmer of the Year Renata Sander won all three breaststroke races, with a PB in the 50 BR (31.71), also setting a new state record in this event. Sander is coming strong with in season best times in both 100 and 200 Breaststroke (1.10.18 & 2.36.66), ranking top 2 in all three Breaststroke events in Brazil in 2017.
The main attraction of the competition, however, was the great 1.500m Freestyle Challenge, between the Olympian Miguel Valente, SCM South American record holder Lucas Kanieski, and Open Water World Medalist Diogo Villarinho. Valente won the challenge with a 15:27.56, Kanieski coming second (15.30.63) and Villarinho third (15:34.27).
The Tournament was the last preparatory meet before the swimmers race the Brazilian Championships – Maria Lenk Trophy (May 2-6), in Rio de Janeiro, which will be selection for World Championships.
