The Grand Valley State men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams increased their leads at the 2023 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships being held at the Holland Aquatic Center. The Laker women have 483.5 points, 88 ahead of Wayne State, while the Laker men have a two-day total of 470.5 points, 190 clear of Wayne State in second.
Women
Junior Alysa Wager was able to get the evening session started in fine fashion with a win in the 100 fly, setting a GLIAC Championship, GLIAC all-time and GVSU record when she touched in 54.60. Bianca Licari finished eighth (57.74).
Freshman Katie O’Connell set a GVSU freshman record and claimed the GLIAC Championship in the 400 IM with a time of 4:21.55. Fellow freshman Gaia Tomaselli finished third (4:28.15) and Sarah Puscas touched eighth in a time of 4:34.82. Dayna Borregard touched ninth in 4:34.65 and Liv Geiger finished 12th with a time of 4:39.91.
Freshman Lucy Hedley set a GVSU freshman record in the 200 free, claiming the GLIAC Championship in a time of 1:48.50. Freshman Angelica Angilletta tallied a second-place finish (1:49.87), Tina Winter touched ninth (1:52.84), Emma Bliss 12th (1:53.46), Linda Frick 13th (1:54.12) and Rebecca Farber 14th (1:54.60).
The women’s 400 medley relay team of Angelica Angilletta, Delaney Wihebrink, Alysa Wager and Lucy Hedley claimed the GLIAC Championship with a time of 3:45.04.
Men
Senior Keegan Hawkins captured went back-to-back in the 400 IM, claiming the 2023 GLIAC Championship in a time of 3:52.12. Hawkins doubled as the 200 and 400 IM GLIAC Champion in 2022 and 2023. Jon Kantzenbach touched fourth in a time of 3:56.75, Matt Lane finished fifth (3:58.03) and Thomas Zoldowski 13th (4:05.55).
Sophomore Matt Bosch set a GLIAC Championship meet record and the GVSU varsity record in the 200 free when he touched the wall first in a time of 1:35.56. Senior Roger Miret Sala touched second in a time of 1:36.40, junior Eric Hieber was fourth in 1:37.74, sophomore Austin Millard was fifth with a time of 1:38.81 and Evan Scotto DiVetta was 11th (1:39.87).
Markus Kruse finished third in the 100 fly with a time of 48.63, followed by Kyle Raskay in fifth (48.85), Brennan Neitzel in sixth (49.15) and Will Herwig in 11th (49.96).
GVSU finished second in the 400 medley relay as Miret Sala, Hawkins, Raskay and Bosch hit the wall second in a time of 3:13.57.
Senior Wrigley Field finished second on the 3-meter board with a score of 430.45, while Isaiah Swilley finished third with a score of 426.75.
