October 12, 2013

The Denison men’s swimming & diving team kicked off its season with a 198-156 dual meet victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe, Wabash, on Saturday in Granville.  Denison posted victories in every race before declaring exhibition over the final nine events of the meet.

Senior Sean Chabot was a winner in the 100 backstroke in 52.31 and the 50-yard backstroke in 24.46.  In the butterfly events, sophomore Andrew Rich won the 100 fly in 52.37 and the 50 fly in 23.26.

First-year breaststroker Al Nennig made a strong debut, winning the 100 breast in 59.23 and the 50 breaststroke in 27.08.  Classmate Cam Young took the top spot in the 500 free in 4:54.04, and also won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.92.  Fellow rookie, Jack Lindell, won a pair of individual medley events.  His time of 1:57.37 was good enough to win the 200 IM.  He also touched in 53.80 to win the 100 IM.

In the sprint freestyle events, Ryan Fleming won the 50 free in 21.41, edging teammate Conrad Wuorinen by .03 seconds.  Wuorinen would later post an exhibition time of 1:45.94 in the 200 free that would have won the event.  Denison’s other sprint free win came from senior Spencer Fronk in the 100 free (46.62).

In diving, Connor Dignan finished first in the 1-meter board with a six-dive score of 304.05.  Connor Dorff was second at 299.10.  The standings were the same in the 3-meter competition as Dignan posted a score of 313.43 and Dorff finished at 277.13.  Both diving events were exhibition and points were not factored into the final score.

In the final regularly scored race of the meet, Denison freshman Sam Strosnider won the 200 butterfly in 1:58.31.

Denison will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 19) when the swimmers compete at the Kenyon Relays.  The divers will stay home and compete at Denison Diving Relays beginning at noon.  The Denison Sports Network will provide live video coverage of the diving from the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
