Rochester, New York’s Serafina Viola has indicated she plans to swim at Fairfield University beginning in the 2020-21 season. Viola is a senior at Penfield High School and swims year-round for Fairport Area Swim Team (FAST). FAST coach Ryan Callan said, “What drew Viola to Fairfield was their new business school, the beautiful campus, the coaching staff and the teammates there. She plans to study marketing.”
Viola was a two-time A-finalist for Penfield High School at the 2018 New York State Federation Girls Swimming Championships last November. She finished 4th in the 50 free (23.68) and 7th in the 100 free (52.07). She also anchored Penfield’s 200 free relay (23.65) to 13th place and its 400 free relay (52.14) to 16th. After high school season she swam at the Niagara Swimming LSC Short Course Championships and went PBs in the 100/200 back and 200 IM. She was runner-up in the 100 free and 200 back. Last summer she competed at ISCA Summer Senior Championships and took 9th in the 50 free, 23rd in the 100 free, 13th in the 50 back, and 34th in the 100 back. At the ISCA Junior National Cup last spring she finaled in the 50/200 free, 50/100 back, and 50 fly.
Viola will be an immediate-impact player for the Stags. Her best 50 free time would have put her at the top of the Fairfield sprint free group last season and she would have made A finals at MAAC Championships in the 50 free and 100 free with Maria Nitti (conference champion in both events) and Samantha D’Alessandro. She would have been the only Fairfield swimmer in the A finals of the 100/200 back. The Stags have won the women’s MAAC title the last two seasons in a row after having finished 6th in 2017.
