PITTSBURGH — The Duquesne University swimming and diving team won all 14 events and rolled to a 204-57 Senior Day victory over Saint Francis on Saturday afternoon at Towers Pool. Lexi Sundgren (200-yard freestyle) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kayla Johnson, Sundgren, Gaby Jenkins, and Natalia Fryckowska headlined the day setting new pool records.
Sundgren, a freshman out of Pittsburgh, set the new 200 freestyle record at Towers Pool with a 1:50.73, splitting 25.91 / 27.81 / 28.07 / 28.94. Julia Sobun (1:53.71) and Jenkins (1:54.07) finished right behind in second and third.
Duquesne also claimed the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Johnson (23.93) won the 50-yard and Sobun (52.52) paced the 100-yard. Fryckowska (23.98) and Molly Brennan (24.92) rounded out the top three in the 50-yard event, while Jenkins (52.56) and Fryckowska (53.45) took second and third in the 100-yard. In the 500-yard freestyle, Aislinn Mooney took gold turning in a 5:13.38 and Sydney Severini was the runner up at 5:16.97.
The record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay squad posted a 3:29.83, edging out the previous pool record by less than a second. The DU quartet of Orla Egan, Katie Simpson, Sobun, and Molly Brennan followed closed behind in second with a 3:35.38.
Haley Scholer won both her individual events with a 4:28.90 in the 400-yard IM and a 2:08.60 in the 200-yard IM, while also being a member of the 200-yard medley relay winning team. Severini, Sobun, and Johnson joined Scholer on the relay-winning squad to begin the meet just beating out teammates Reagan Linkous, Madison Dickert, Abby Mele, and Fryckowska by 0.06 seconds.
Mele took first in both breaststroke events (100 and 200 yard), while Dickert closely followed in second each time.
Katie Simpson (100-yard backstroke), Madeline Marks (200-yard butterfly), and Claudia Rzeznik (100-yard butterfly) rounded out the 14 event winners.
“Eddie and I were extremely pleased with the results of today’s meet,” said head coach David Sheets. “The celebration of our seniors in a packed house in conjunction with some great swimming was a formula for a lot of excitement. They rallied around each other on every race and showed great support. I’m proud of each and every one of our swimmers and divers.”
The Dukes honored 10 final-year athletes prior to the meet for their contributions to the program; Molly Brennan, Madison Dickert, Natalia Fryckowska, Regan Holstein, Gaby Jenkins, Reagan Linkous, Madeline Marks, Abby Mele, Payton Rayko, and Alyssa Schonbachler – along with graduating team manager Julia Davis.
