David Plummer To Sound Gjallarhorn At First Game In New Vikings Stadium

U.S. Olympic gold medalist David Plummer has been picked to sound the Gjallarhorn Sunday at the first ever game for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in their brand new stadium.

The Gjallarhorn is a horn from Norse mythology that has become one of the most iconic sounds of the Minnesota NFL franchise. Sounding the horn before the game is similar to throwing out the first pitch in baseball.

Plummer starred for the University of Minnesota in the college realm, and has put together a lengthy professional career in the state. After missing the U.S. Olympic Team in 2012, Plummer came back with a vengeance in 2016, not only making the Olympic team but coming home with a bronze medal in the 100 back and gold as part of the 4×100 medley relay.

He’ll be honored by his home state Sunday morning, with the Vikings kicking off against the San Diego Chargers at noon. The preseason game will be the first ever played in the brand-new U.S. Bank Stadium opening up in Minneapolis.

Plummer is the first swimmer to be honored with the Gjallarhorn, and joins Olympic medalists Dennis Koslowski (wrestling), Shawn Johnson (gymnastics) and Neal Broten (hockey) on the all-time list of Honorary Vikings. You can view that full list here.

The game begins at noon, and you can watch on Fox.

One reason why I love swimming is to see stories like David Plummer. It’s amazing to watch swimmers fall painfully short of goals only to come back better and stronger later. Kind of reminds me of Pablo Morales overcoming disappointment in ’88 and Jeff Rouse missing the 100 back gold in ’92 only to come back and win in ’96

Huge deal in Minnesota! David also coached local clubs and high school teams. The new Vikings stadium is fantastic and it’s wonderful for the community to honor our olympians! Glad he is not throwing out the first pitch for our struggling Twins (just lost 9 straight).
