For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Joey Wachter, a senior at Spring Lake High school in Spring Lake, Michigan, has announced his verbal commitment to join the University of Alabama swim team this fall. Wachter swims with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics.

Last spring Wachter was a multiple event finalist at the MHSAA (Michigan High School) Division 3 State Championships (small schools), finishing second in both the 100 back (49.90) and 50 free (20.68). In the 100 back he was beaten by Riley Vanmeter, a former teammate at MLA and current freshman at the University of Alabama. Wachter  also competed at the Winter Junior Nationals-East last December. There, he finished 14th in the 50 free (20.65), 24th in the 100 free (45.42), and 19th in the 100 back (49.22).

  • 100 back – 48.81

Alabama is currently in their first season under new head coach Coley Stickels. Last year at the 2019 SEC Championships Alabama finished 6th out of 10 teams. It took 19.95/43.82/1:36.25 to qualify for scoring C-finals in the freestyle events as well as 47.71 in the 100 back at those SEC Championships.

Last year Alabama’s sprint group was led by Robert Howard. Howard finished 3rd at the 2019 NCAA Championships in the 50 free. After he arrives on campus, Wachter will have one year of overlap with Samuel DiSette, who finished 6th in the 50 free at last year’s SEC Championships. Through a coaching change and Howard’s graduation, Alabama won its 2nd-straight conference titles in both the 50 free (Zane Waddell, 19.07) and 3rd-straight conference title in the 200 free relay.
