Two key Brazilian personnel have announced their resignations on the heels of our report last month regarding the nation’s Sports Minister having been relieved of duty less than 130 days out from this summer’s Olympic Games.
George Hilton, who had been in the role of Sports Minister since just last year, was ‘pushed out of his job’ effective Thursday, March 18th and now Col Adilson Moreira, Commander of Brazil’s National Security Force and Henrique Eduardo Alves, Tourism Minister, have reportedly both turned in their resignations.
According to Andrei Rodrigues, Secretary for Major Events at Brazil’s Justice Ministry, the country’s prevalent political unrest has led to ‘international distrust’, while Col Moreira’s resignation letter reported stated he ‘was ashamed the country was being led by an unscrupulous group’
Current Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff of the PRB, who began her 2nd term 14 months ago, is at risk of being impeached over allegations that she manipulated government accounts in order to disguise a growing national deficit. Congress is expected to begin voting in May to determine whether or not Rousseff would be removed from office.
Col Moreira’s force of approximately 9600 officers was involved in the security preparations for the Games, and is slated to guard sporting venues during the Olympics.
Brazilian officials said the Olympic Games’ planning process would not be affected by the resignation announcements.
