Internationally-born Auburn alumni highlighted the Auburn Richard Quick Invitational last Saturday and Sunday.
Class of 2018’s Luis Martinez dominated the butterfly events, winning the 50 and 100 fly with times of 23.43 and51.74, respectively. The 2016 Olympian also swam a 50.83 in the 100 free.
Martinez was right on his Guatemalan National Records in all three events. He came within .04 of his record in the 100 free, which he set in 2019, and within .20 of his record in the 50 fly, a time he posted in 2018. He was one-third of a second off his National Record in the 100 fly which he set at the 2019 Pan American Games.
Class of 2020’s Santiago Grassi posted a 23.81 in the 50 fly. He also swam:
- 53.3 in the 100 fly,
- 22.93 in the 50 free
- 51.2 in the 100 free
Grassi was within .16 of his Argentinian National Record in the 50 fly, which he set at the 2019 Mare Nostrum, and 1.5 seconds off his 100 fly National Record which he set at the 2019 Richard Quick Invite. He was about .7 off his lifetime best 100 free time which he posted in 2019 and about .65 off his best 50 free time, also from 2019.
This was Grassi’s last competition before heading off to training camp to prepare for his second Olympic Games in Tokyo:
Current Auburn senior Aryan Makhija, who holds three Indian National Records in short course meters but none in long course, swam a 1:53.42 in the 200 free to come within .21 of his lifetime best time from 2018. He also raced the 400 free where he posted a time of 4:03.21, about 5 seconds off his best time of 3:58.36 from 2019.
NC State commit Stephen Conrad from City of Mobile dropped a 58.58 in the 100 back to win the event, about 1.4 seconds off his lifetime best from May.
On the women’s side, class of 2020 Auburn grad Julie Meynen swept the sprint freestyle events. 2016 Olympian Meynen won the 50 free with a time of 26.06, about 1.2 seconds off her Luxembourg National Record from 2019 World Championships.
She also swam a 57.32 in the 100 free, within 2.6 seconds off her National Record. Both of her records are from the 2019 World Championships. Meynen rounded off her event lineup with the 50 fly where she touched the wall first with a time of 28.27, .61 off her National Record from the 2019 Richard Quick Invite.
