Fordham Women, Marist Men Win in Thursday Dual

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – After sweeping its opening home meet last Friday, the Fordham swimming & diving teams started their first road weekend on Thursday night at Marist.  The Fordham women improved to 2-0 on the year with a 156-85 win over the Red Foxes, with the Fordham men falling to 1-1 with a 144-95 loss to Marist.

In the women’s competition, Fordham took the top time in all 11 swimming events with three Rams winning multiple events.  Paulina Watson grabbed first in the 200 freestyle (1:55.34) and 200 backstroke (2:04.81) events, while Amelia Bullock captured the top spot in the 200 butterfly (2:03.81) and the 200 breaststroke (2:20.23) events.  Clare Culver completed the trip of multi-event winners, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:10.40) and the 100 freestyle (53.71) events.

Other event winners for the Rams included Alison Lin in the 1000 freestyle (10:26.47), Michelle Martin in the 50 freestyle (24.54), and Chloe Mitchell in the 500 freestyle (5:10.53).

In the relays, the 400 medley relay team of Watson, Vaula Vekkeli, Bullock, and Theresa Mullen finished first in 3:59.12, while the 400 freestyle relay of Martin, Kiara Norris, Samantha McDonald, and Culver had the top time at 3:35.72.

On the men’s side, Fordham won two events on the evening with Josh Stegen taking first in the 200 freestyle in the 1:43.52, while Connor Wright was the top swimmer in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.72.  Stegen also added a second place finish in the 100 freestyle (46.99).

In relay action, the Fordham’s 400 medley relay team of Spencer Clarke, Patrick Wilson, Casey Sawyer, and Stegen was second in 3:30.53, while the 400 freestyle relay squad of Nicholas Chao, Bryce Bollesen, Kevin Berry, and Clarke had the second-best time of 3:11.96.

The Rams continue their first road weekend of competition on Saturday, October 26th, when the Rams travel to Boston to face Boston University, starting at 1:30 PM.

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist men’s swimming and diving defeated the Fordham Rams 144-95 on Thursday night at the McCann Natatorium in the team’s home opener. With the win, Marist remains undefeated on the season, improving its record to 2-0. The meet was not a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet, so the Red Foxes conference record remains at 1-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The men opened the competition with a first-place victory in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:25.68. The team consisted of Sean Doran, Jackson Klarsfeld, Pavel Makarchuk, and Ahmed Sallam
  • John Hurley led the way for Marist with 19 total points, a meet-high for the men. He placed first in the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:49.98, and then later on won the 500-yard free with a time of 4:47.74.
  • Sallam opened the season with his second absolutely dominant performance, totaling 18 points for the second straight meet.
  • Besides the great performance in the medley relay, he also placed first in the 50-yard free, with a time of 21.33. In addition, he took first in the 100-yard free, with a time of 46.86.
  • Klarsfeld also had 18 total points for the Red Foxes. He placed first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:54.36, and then won the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:06.81.
  • The men ran the table when it came to diving events in the meet. David Gallino won the 1-meter dive with a score of 269.93, while Raislan Aiken took second place with a score of 266.33. Aiken then won the 3-meter dive with a score of 254.78.

Marist women’s swimming and diving was defeated 156-85 by the Fordham Rams on Thursday night. The Red Foxes are now 1-16 in this history of the program against Fordham. For the season, Marist drops to 1-1, but remains undefeated with a 1-0 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The women opened the competition with a third-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, with a time of 4:01.01. The team consisted of Juliet Nowak, Georgeanne Zimmerman, Leigh-Anne Zanella, and Megan Lasto.
  • In the first individual event of the night, Sidney Judson had an impressive performance in the 1000-yard free, falling just short of first place. She finished second with a time of 10:35.07
  • Zimmerman lead Red Fox swimmers with eight total points. She placed second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:11:02, and then third in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:28.76.
  • Esabelle Gervasio shined for the divers, despite the loss. She swept both diving competitions, in what was a very impressive 18-point performance. She took first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 244.13, and then won the 1-meter dive with a score of 258.38.
  • The women finished strong, taking first place in the 400-yard free relay, with a time of 3:40.42. The team consisted of Emma Butzler, Jessica Freund, Judson, and Jordyn Deubel.

UP NEXT
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, November 2 against the defending MAAC Champion Rider. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
