La svedese Sarah Sjostrom è l’atleta che ha vinto di più nella prima edizione della FINA Champions Swim Series.
Dietro di lei, l’americano Michael Andrew, che a differenza della Sjostrom, ha partecipato anche alla staffetta nella serata conclusiva.
Ad Indianapolis Sarah Sjostrom ha totalizzato 44.000$ in 5 gare individuali, che sommati ai premi precedenti, costituiscono un ammontare di 148.000$.
In totale, ha vinto 12 eventi individuali in tre tappe ed è stata seconda in altre 2 occasioni.
Katinka Hosszu è seconda nella classifica generale con $123.000. La Hosszu ha però gareggiato in ben 15 eventi individuali.
Michael Andrew si posiziona terzo con 103.500$ su 14 gare. L’unico oro conquistato da Andrew è quello nei 100 metri farfalla di sabato.
Nella sua prima apparizione della stagione, la ranista Lilly King ha vinto più di qualsiasi altro nuotatore in una sola tappa. Quattro ori, tre individuali ed uno in staffetta.
Se vogliamo fare un confronto, il guadagno più alto nella FINA World Cup Series 2018 è stato quello di Vlad Morozov, che ha guadagnato $332.000, anche in sette tappe. Si tratta di poco più di 47.000 dollari per tappa, che è abbastanza vicino agli oltre 49.000 dollari che la Sjostrom ha guadagnato per ogni tappa della Champions Series.
A ben guardare però vi è una differenza enorme tra i primi tre atleti e tutti gli altri.
Per fare un esempio, solo 19 nuotatori (10 uomini, 9 donne) hanno guadagnato più di 10.000 dollari alla FINA World Cup Series.
83 nuotatori hanno guadagnato almeno 10.000 dollari ed è qui che bisogna colmare il divario.
Quei montepremi, al di là del formato, sono utili ai nuotatori professionisti per inseguire i loro sogni olimpici. Questo è ciò che anche la ISL intende fare, contribuire a sostenere il futuro del nuoto attraverso il sostegno monetario che arriva grazie ad un evento accattivante e spettacolare per chi lo guarda da casa.
Gli atleti americani sono quelli che hanno portato a casa il bottino più corposo, guadagnando 621.000 dollari come gruppo, seguiti dai russi (313.000 dollari) e dai cinesi (303.000 dollari). L’Ungheria ha guadagnato 204.000 dollari grazie alla tappa di Budapest, mentre Sarah Sjostrom da sola ha fatto classificare la Svezia quinta.
