Today on the SwimSwam Breakdown, we discuss Marrit Steenbergen and other star athletes from Canet and Barcelona, the IOC president saying she doesn’t believe in paying athletes, and Caeleb Dressel training with Virginia.

Are we thinking Dressel is one of the athletes reaching out Cody Miller??
No. Caeleb makes more money than the EGs swimmers do.
Regarding paying Olympic athletes by the IOC – would having a single host site save enough money where that would be more feasible?
No idea what the costs are to set up new venues / infrastructure every few years is, but the whole “just host it in Athens / Beijing / the moon / etc every time” thing has come up before but I wonder if it would be more useful in this context.
I think direct payments from the IOC to athletes are wildly impractical. I sort of laid this out in a comment yesterday, but trying to put athletes from the USA on the same scale as athletes from Burundi creates a number of really challenging practical considerations.
I don’t think having a single site would actually help, because part of the economics of the Olympics is making host cities and states and countries foot a huge part of the bill. The Olympics aren’t actually as financially successful as folks think they are – they require lots of subsidies, and those subsidies come because the different host cities get to declare themselves a city of the world.

All sporting disciplines now have “Athlete Reps” in their administrative structure. The IOC has a bunch. To what extent are the Olympic athletes channeling their frustrations and case through the designated structure? It is way easier to remain “tone deaf” to the broad social media vibe than if it is clearly articulated and strongly pushed through the formal channels.
Tone deaf is the only way to put it. Whether it is a just perception or not, former swimmers haven’t been seen as helping the swimming landscape (House Settlement and IOC president statements).
I think Dressel should concentrate on the 50 free and 50 fly and follow McEvoy’s training method.
Crawler, I am in strong agreement.
Why? The 100 Fly is his best event.
Except that his swimming technique isn’t even 25% as good as McEvoy’s. Dressel got where he was back in 2017-2021 because of his natural athleticism, which has been in steep decline post-2022.
For the boxing fans out there: McEvoy has aged like Bernard Hopkins, whereas Dressel is aging like Roy Jones Jr.
Good job, gents! Glad you gave the leadoff focus to the sub-52 ladies! May we see more. 9 years is too long for a WR.
