IUPUI Men Triumphant Over Xavier and Ball State in Home Tri-Meet

The Jaguars hosted a tri-meet against Xavier and Ball State at IUPUI Natatorium on Friday. IUPUI defeated the Musketeers by a score of 165-129, and downed the Cardinals, 215-85. Xavier beat Ball State with a decisive 185-103. Full results here.

The Jaguars jumped out in front beginning with the 200 medley relay, when Tony Carroll (24.22), Landan Mintch (26.01), Adam Ferguson (23.31), and Lennart Kuester (21.35) turned in a solid 1:34.89 for the win. Xavier (Erik Biernat, Carter Clark, Armando Moss, and Luke Johanns) placed second in 1:36.66. Ball State’s top quartet (Drew Sullenbarger, Zach Toman, Bradley Ridge, and Cole Smith) went 1:37.80.

Seniors Carroll and Ferguson each handed the Jaguars a pair of individual victories. Carroll clocked a 1:43.49 in the 200 free to outrace Xavier’s Eric Dirvin (1:44.55). He later won the 200 back in 1:54.19, ahead of Xavier’s Rodrigo Suriano (1:55.73) and Ball State’s Sullenbarger (1:57.68).

Ferguson notched up wins in the 100 breast and 100 fly. In the breast, he went 58.74 and won a tight battle with Xavier senior Michael Gordon (59.17) and IUPUI teammate Mintch (59.45). The fly was even closer; Ferguson successfully held off a late charge from Ball State’s Tanner Barton, out-touching the Cardinal 52.33 to 52.38.

IUPUI freshman Aaron Brysch put up some strong swims. Notably, he emerged victorious in a tight 100 back battle against the Musketeers’ Suriano, winning 53.26 to 53.46. Another Jaguar highlight was Keuster’s 100 free win; the sophomore touched in 47.04 ahead of Xavier’s Johanns (47.62). Brysch placed third in 47.77. Senior Alexander Rhoda put more points on the board for the Jaguars when he edged Xavier’s Dirvin in the 200 IM, 1:57.95 to 1:58.08.

The Xavier Musketeers won four events, including a double from Nick Strader. The sophomore won the 1000 with a personal-best 9:43.11, moving up to third on XU’s all-time list. His teammate, senior Kiernan McGeehan, made a valiant push over the last 200 yards but fell .02 short of catching IUPUI’s Richard Sunkel for second place.

Strader later led a 1-2-3 Musketeer sweep of the 500 free, winning in 4:43.13 ahead of teammates McGeehan (4:44.67) and Nick Foster (4:46.05).

Senior Armando Moss racked up points for the Musketeers with a 21.45 victory in the 50 free; his teammate Johanns finished .01 back with 21.46. Sophomore Robert Van Kirk recorded a win in the 200 breast, going 2:10.14 ahead of the Jags’ Garrett Goff (2:11.12) and Rhoda (2:11.72).

The Musketeers won the final event of the night with a 3:07.00 in the 400 free relay featuring Moss (47.66), Suriano (46.56), Gordon (46.90) and Johanns (45.88).

Ball State had several high notes in the tri-meet, most notably a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 fly from sophomores Barton (1:56.19), Ridge (1:58.56) and Jacob Eckert (2:01.30).

Senior Sullenbarger added to his third-place finish in the 200 back with a fifth in the 100 back (54.38). Junior Smith had a successful outing, placing fourth in the 100 free (47.95) and fifth in the 50 (21.93). Sophomore Ridge added a fourth in the 100 fly (53.49) to his second in the 200 fly.

The Cards’ 400 free relay of Austin Green, Banistre Lienhart, Neal Fennig, and Smith finished fifth with 3:12.58.
