McKenna Stone, a junior at Metea Valley High School in the Chicago suburbs who trains club with Fox Valley Swim Team, has verbally committed to Cal for 2021.

Stone is one of the best sprinters in the high school class of 2025. At the 2018 IHSA Girls State Championships, as a sophomore, Stone raced to second-place finishes in both the 50 and 100 free. In the 200 free relay, where Metea Valley touched second, she split 22.39 on the anchor leg, while she was 49.30 anchoring their runner-up 400 free relay.

This past summer, she secured an Olympic Trials cut in the 50 free in long course (25.81) and hit LCM lifetime bests in the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM, too. Stone is looking very strong this high school season, as she’s already been 54-point twice in the 100 fly before sectionals or State (she leads Illinois’ high school rankings this season with a 54.50, not far from her best time). She’s also ranked third in the 50 free this year (23.69).

Cal is graduating one of the best sprinters in history, Abbey Weitzeil, after this season, along with key sprinter Maddie Murphy. Incoming freshman Isabelle Stadden is the best 50 freestyler heading to campus next fall at 22.71, while Nicole Oliva has been as fast as 49.95 in the 100, and Stone will bring important pure sprint speed to the Bears in the fall of 2021 (especially considering 2024 sprinter Gracie Felner recently changed verbal commitments from Cal to Alabama).

At the 2019 Pac-12 Championships, Stone would’ve made the 50 free B-final and the 100 free C-final with her lifetime bests.
