2023 Berlin Swim Open: Lukas Martens Puts Up Another 3:43 400 Free

The final day of the 2023 Berlin Swim Open saw 21-year-old Lukas Martens clock a time of 3:43.86 to get to the wall first in the men’s 400m free final.

Martens clinched the gold ahead of Oliver Klemet who settled for silver in 3:45.34 while Sven Schwarz rounded out the top 3 in 3:46.56. Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock placed 4th in 3:49.30.

Martens has actually been quicker this season, having laid down a season-best of 3:43.32 earlier this month to rank #2 in the world this season. Klemet’s time now checks him in as the 6th fastest performer on the season.

Lucas Matzerath topped the men’s 200m breast podium, taking gold in a final time of 2:10.33. That fell just painstakingly .01 off the 2:10.32 World Aquatics ‘A’ standard needed for Fukuoka.

Poland’s Adela Piskorksa picked up another backstroke win, topping the 200m distance with a time of 2:09.82. That’s a big personal best for the woman who had never before been under the 2:12 barrier in this event.

Piskorska not only qualified for this summer’s World Championships, but her swim came within .08 of the longstanding Polish national record of 2:09.74 Alicja Tchórz put on the books in 2009.

20-year-old Isabel Gose put up a strong swim of 4:03.84 to take the women’s 400m free event. The reigning European champion easily cleared the ‘A’ standard of 4:10.57 to grab the gold, producing her 3rd swiftest effort ever.

Gose owns a personal best of 4:03.21 from the prelims at the 2020 Olympic Games. She earned last year’s European Championships title in 4:04.13.

Gose’s 4:03.84 now ranks her 6th in the world on the season.

Additional Winners

• The men’s 200m back saw Cornelius Jahn top the podium in 1:59.06, the sole time of the field under the 2:00 barrier.
• Jessica Felsner got it done for gold in the women’s 50m free, clocking a time of 24.84, under the ‘A’ cut of 25.04 needed for Fukuoka.
• The men’s 50m free saw Mats Eidam get to the wall first in 22.44.
• Luca Armbruster scored the victory in the men’s 50m fly, touching in 23.38. He’s already been as quick as 23.02 this season to rank 5th in the world.
