2020 Jr. Pan Pacific Swimming Championships Cancelled; Hawaii Will Host in 2022

The 2020 Jr. Pan Pacific Swimming Championships have been cancelled, and the next edition will take place in the summer of 2022 in Hawaii, USA Swimming told SwimSwam on Monday. The move was expected after USA Swimming cancelled all of its other summer championships last week amid the global coronavirus pandemic, though they are exploring smaller regional championships to replace them.

The event was scheduled to be held from August 19th-22nd in Honolulu, Hawaii. While the American team had not yet been selected, Sue Chen (NCAP) and Chuck Batchelor (Bluefish) were named as the head coaches in February.

The American teams were to be chosen based on the best available finishers at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials with up to 20 male and 20 female swimmers.

After the 2018 event, which was held in Fiji, the U.S. was due to host in 2020. That hosting right will shift to 2022.

The Jr. Pan Pacific Championships are held in even-numbered year for swimmers aged 13-18 as of December 31st of the competition year. The meet is designed for nations that border the Pacific Ocean. Like the senior version, the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, the meet was founded by the charter nations of Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States.

In 2018, they were joined by New Zealand, China, Fiji, Singapore, South Korea, and Ecuador. Mexico entered 1 swimmer in the meet, but he never wound up racing.

As expected. Disappointing for the junior swimmers who perhaps would have made junior teams for the first or last time . Safety first though.

So are Sue and Chuck both still in? I’ve personally worked with Sue and she’s a fantastic coach, I really hope she still can do this
