Johannes Calloni of Scarlet Aquatics and Saint Peter’s Prep in NJ has verbally committed to Stanford’s class of 2021. He’s the reigning 1500m free U.S. Junior National Champion after clocking a meet record time of 15:16.62 this summer in Minneapolis.
TOP TIMES (SCY/LCM)
- 200 free – 1:41.18/1:53.56
- 500/400 free – 4:26.60/3:55.60
- 1000/800 free – 9:07.85/8:08.29
- 1650/1500 free – 15:20.97/15:16.62
- 200 back – 1:48.40/2:03.73
Calloni has 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials cuts in the 200m back and 1500m free, though he was busy overseas this summer and didn’t swim at Trials– he represented Italy at the 2016 European Jr Championships. At that meet, he swam the 400 free (23rd), 800 free (9th), 1500 free (9th), and 200 back (27th). Calloni also split a 1:53.64 anchoring Italy’s 4×200 free relay in prelims.
Stanford adds a serious impact player in the distance events with Calloni, and his LCM prowess suggests he has more to drop in the NCAA pool. He’d have placed in the Pac-12 Champs C final for the 500 free and B final for the 200 back last season. His key contributions will likely come in the mile, which is his best event; he’d have touched 14th in that event last season at Pac-12s.
Calloni joins a formidable incoming class for the Cardinal, including our #3 recruit of the entire class, NCAP’s Matthew Hirschberger. Hirschberger and current Stanford freshman True Sweetser represent new blood for Stanford’s distance group– Calloni will be training partners with two of the best young milers in the country.
Stanford’s class of 2021 now includes:
- Johannes Calloni
- #3 Matthew Hirschberger
- #13 Brennan Pastorek
- #14 Alex Liang
- Glen Cowand
- Alberto Mestre
- Jordan Greenberg
