2015 Short Course Far Westerns Championships

The Far Westerns short-course championship meet is the end-of-season taper meet for a large number of teams in the Western Zone, and specifically so for their 14-and-under swimmers. The format is prelims/finals, but with only ten swimmers scoring in one heat of finals.

On Day Three, the scored events will be:

200 Butterfly – Prelims

Walnut Creek Aquabears teammates Brittany Usinger* and Danielle Taylor* topped the field in the 17-18 girls’ 200 fly, going 2:00.50 and 2:04.34, respectively. Santa Clara Swim Club’s Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou* beat her seed time by 2.4 seconds to lead the 15-16 category with 1:59.66. Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics’ Chloe Isleta* qualified second in 2:01.27.

Palo Alto Stanford’s Daichi Matsuda* and Joe Molinari went 1-2 in the boys’ 17-18 age group, with 1:51.33 and 1:52.63. Bryce Kuchan of Mesa Aquatics Club dropped 1.1 seconds and qualified third in 1:52.74. In 15-16s it was PASA’s Alex Liang* out front with 1:52.39. Pleasanton Seahawks’ Christopher Jhong* and Quicksilver Swimming’s Ben Dietz* both dropped time to qualify second and third, with 1:56.16 and 1:56.60, respectively.

500 Freestyle – Prelims

Miranda Heckman of Pleasanton earned the center lane for tonight’s 13-14 final, qualifying in 4:57.64. Sofia Sigrist* of Palo Alto Stanford dropped nearly 7 seconds to put up the second-fastest time, 5:07.55. Kristina Murphy* of Spare Time Aquatics Sacramento also had a big drop, going her best by 5.2 seconds and qualifying third with 5:07.68. On the boys’ side, Irvine Novaquatics’ Hunter Hitchens* rose to the top with a qualifying time of 4:40.92. College Area Swim Team’s Mitchell Stoddard* dropped 2 seconds for the second-fastest swim of the morning, 4:48.76, just 3/100 ahead of Lucas Hess of Park City Swimming.

In the 11-12 age group, Bianca Yongyuth of Santa Clara Swim Club put up the morning’s fastest 500 free in 5:09.82. Taylor Moultrie of College Area Swim Team dropped 2 seconds and qualified second for finals, going 5:16.90. Winn Aung of Redding Swim Team led the charge on the boys’ side with 4:55.76. Justin Culetu dropped 2.5 and broke 5:00 for the first time; he was second in 4:58.39. Pleasanton’s Lleyton Plattel qualified third in 5:05.99.

Yosemite Marlins’ Claire Tuggle went 5:27.05 to lead the 10-and-under  girls by quite a margin. The second qualifier was Mirsha Lora of South Bay Aquatics (5:42.44). Humberto Najera (5:27.29) and Joel Hernandez (5:38.31) of Novaquatics will occupy the center lanes of the pool in the boys’ 10-and-under final tonight.

100 Individual Medley – Prelims

With a 1.5-second drop, Chanell Kann of De Anza Cupertino Aquatics, posted the first of six 1:02s to lead the 11-12 girls qualifiers. Santa Clara’s Nadia Bouraoui (1:02.31) and DACA’s Jessica Chu (1:02.36) qualified second and third. Alexander Pascual of Napa Valley Swim Team improved his seed time by .7 to lead the boys’ 11-12 field with 57.88. Lars Hanna from Aces Swim Club went 59.48 for second, while Michael Dulay from Terrapins Swim Team qualified third in 1:00.17.

100 Backstroke – Prelims

Autumn Wolfgramm (58.00) of Devil Ray Aquatic Team and PASA’s Jennifer Campbell* (58.07) took the top spots in prelims for the 17-18 girls, while Krivokapic-Zhou* of SCSC was the fastest 15-16 girl in 54.87. Molinari of PASA went 50.68 to top the boys’ 17-18 field; he was followed by teammate Corey Gutierrez* in 51.09, and Mesa’s Kuchan, who dropped over a second to qualify third in 52.44. In the 15-16 race, PASA teammates Benjamin Ho* (49.23) and Andrew Cho* (52.34) qualified 1-2 with, while East Bay Aquatics Association’s Lyon Zhang* dropped a second to jump up to third in 54.54.

Foothill Aqua Sharks Swim Team’s Chloe Clark dropped a half-second to lead the 13-14 girls in 57.07. Davis Arden Racing Team’s Zoe Cosgrove improved her seed time by 2 seconds, finishing second in the morning with 57.13. PASA’s Milan Hilde-Jones also dropped time and qualified third in 57.21. The top six girls were all under 58. Nathan Yates* from Santa Clara jumped to the top of the boys’ 13-14 category with his 1.1-second drop in prelims for 52.11. NOVA’s Kevin Tu went 53.60 to qualify third, while Andrew Rodriguez of Terrapins was third in 54.74.

Pleasanton Seahawks’ Mackenzie Lee dropped over 1.5 seconds to break the 1:00 barrier and qualify first among the 11-12 girls with 59.22. Mission Viejo Nadadores’ Mia Ristic was second in 1:00.65. Nick Williams of Pleasant Valley Swim Team led the boys’ side by 2/100 over Joshua Cho from Wasatch Front Fish Market, 58.74 to 58.76.

Phoenix Swim Club’s Miriam Sheehan dropped .7 for a 10&U meet record of 1:01.82 in prelims. Hannah Lockyer of Montclair Swim Team qualified second in 1:07.11, ahead of Yelin Tahk from Sunn Swimming (1:07.53) and Isabella Abrajan of South Bay Aquatics (1:07.72). Rose Bowl Aquatics’ Ronald Dalmacio also broke a meet mark, going 59.60 to qualify first in the 10&U boys. Mitchell Schott of Irvine Novaquatics (1:07.39) and Bryce Halterman of Indian Wells Valley (1:08.24) were the second- and third-fastest.

100 Breaststroke – Prelims

Marie-Claire Schillinger* of Walnut Creek put up a 1:04.15 to top the girls’ 17-18 group, ahead of teammate Kaya Philapil* (1:04.58) and PASA’s Annalisa Perez* (1:05.10). Quicksilver Swimming’s Hannah Womer dropped nearly a second in prelims to lead the 15-16 girls with 1:04.25.

Joe Kmak* led a 1-2 Palo Alto Stanford trio of leaders in the boys’ 17-18 division, going 57.41; Jeremy Babinet went 58.21. Aaron Huang* of Quicksilver Swimming went a season-best 58.83 to qualify third. East Bay’s Zhang* improved his seed time by .6 and jumped to the top of the 15-16 qualifiers with 57.91. Eric Tolman of Ripon Aquatics qualified second with 58.72.

With her second big drop of the day, Spare Time Aquatics’ Murphy* popped a 1:04.29 in prelims, beating her previous PB by 2.9 seconds. Peak Swimming teammates Vivian Wang* (1:05.64) and Megan Tao (1:06.05) were the next qualifiers in the 13-14 age group. Matthew Wilcox from Terrapins Swim Team got a PB by 1/100 to lead the boys’ 13-14 qualifiers in 1:00.24. Cole Reznick* from Tri Valley Aquatics qualified second in 1:00.81, while Benjamin Winn of Santa Clara dropped a half-second for the third-fastest morning time, 1:01.30.

50 Breaststroke – Prelims

The top four 11-12 girls all qualified with sub-32s: Caraline Baker of Flatiron Athletic Club (31.32), Sophie Lurie (31.35) and Ana Jih-Schiff (31.77) of Walnut Creek, and Cayla Whetstone (31.77) of Piranha Swimming. Canyons Aquatic Club’s Keane Alejandro dropped 3/10 for a PB of 29.53 to lead the boys; Napa Valley’s Pascual (30.14) and Ryan Kim of Palo Alto Stanford (30.44) qualified second and third.

Mia Tandingan from Pikes Peak Athletics was just off her best but still put up the top 10-and-under time with 33.36. Quicksilver’s Courtney Seljeseth (34.29) and Pleasanton’s Sydney Lu (34.45) both went best times to make second and third. Ricky Kurosawa of Boulder City Henderson led the boys’ field with 33.25 in prelims, while PASA’s Jake Anderson and Rick Lundh made finals with 35.26 and 35.78, respectively.

Ronald Dalmacio broke the 10&Under 100 back NAG record in 58.62.

Yes. As expected after her huge 200 free, Claire Tuggle broke the 500 free NAG record in 5.13.74.
It was 5.16.52 by Christina Papadopoulos in 2005.
I had said to Anne Lepesant that she could already prepare her article about that record 2 days ago. 🙂
What a meet for that young swimming star! I’d really like to watch her records in video. 😎
