The 2012-2103 season officially comes to an end on August 31st, though with championship meets come and gone, it’s unlikely that we’ll see any more record-breaking swims in the next 10 days on U.S. soil. There is a matter of the U.S. Junior World Championships, but as of August 13th, 163 National Age Group Records have been broken (or tied) in the USA Swimming ‘season’ that runs from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013 through a short course and a long course round.
There were 103 individual records broken (or tied) and 60 relay records broken (or tied). All USA Swimming members holding United States passports that are 18 years of age or younger are eligible to break a national age group record, but their swim must be reported to USA Swimming to make the record valid. Below is a list of every national age group record that has been reported to USA Swimming over the last year.
These young stars make USA Swimmings future look very bright. Not only are some of these young swimmers already ranked among the top swimmers of any age in the nation, but they beat records set by swimming greats, such as Mary T Meagher, Janet Evans, Dara Torres, Missy Franklin, and Michael Phelps, among others. Four junior swimmers, Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel, and Becca Mann not only broke national age group records, but were members of the World Championship Team that represented Team USA in Barcelona this summer. Several other members of the Junior World Championship Team that will be going to Dubai at the end of the month are also on this list. American swim fans are very lucky to have so many future stars developing. It will be very exciting to watch these young athletes as they continue to develop.
After breaking down all of the new records, there were 27 more records broken (or tied) during the short course season than there were during the long course season. During the short course yards season, there were 95 total records broken (or tied). Of those 95 records, 62 were from individual swims and 33 were from relays. The boys were responsible for 58 of the records and the girls were responsible for 37 new records.
During the Long Course season, 68 records were broken (or tied). There were 41 individual records broken (or tied) and 27 relay records broken (or tied). Of the 68 records broken (or tied) during the long course season, the boys were responsible for 41 records and the girls were responsible for 27.
Michael Andrew, the youngest professional swimmer in America history, and Winn Aung broke short course records during what is typically considered long course season.
There is still a chance for a few more National Age Group Records from the Junior World Championship Team as they compete in Dubai at the end of the month. Aside from the Americans, watch for Dylan Carter of Trinidad & Tobago on this record hunt as well, as he is eligible for USA Swimming National Age Group Records.
- The 13-14 boys and 15-16’s of both gender have been the busiest.
- In total, there have been 17 record-breaking swims for 13-14 boys, 20 for 15-16 girls (thanks Katie and Simone), and 22 for 15-16 boys, and that’s just individual records.
- In total, 41 unique-event yards records have been broken (or tied) individually, and 24 unique-event yards relay records have been broken.
- 21 individual unique-event meters records have been broken (or tied) , and 17 different meters relay records have been broken (or tied).
- In total, that’s 103 different events that have had a record broken (or tied). That’s out of 388 recognized National Age Group Record events (192 long course, 196 short course). So, more than a quarter of the records on the books have been updated since this time last year.

Typo on 11-12 boys long course 200 free, could that have been a 400 IM?
The young man doing a double biceps pose seems to have right attitude. Is he the new Gary Hall Jr. of swimming, the guy that the world of swimming so desperately needs to draw more attention ot it.
“incredible growth of the sport and its increasing popularity” = hyperbole. Swimming always gets a temporary boost after the Olympics. See the thread on why elite level swim meets aren’t well attended by spectators. .
What do we attribute this amount of NAG records to? Suits? Training? Supplements? I’m curious as this is an unprecedented number of records in a short span.
probably a combination of everything…suits and training…and technology. i doubt supplements though. Also…I think the biggest contributor is probably the incredible growth of the sport and its increasing popularity. Little kids inspired by Phelps in Athens and Beijing are now NAG-aged.

naya missy – no, not this year. Remember that she’s on the younger end (13’s) of her age group.
A 15-16 NAG that’s also a world record… That one should hold up for a loooooonnnnnnngggggg time!
There are a few more in the same ballpark. On the women’s side, you have Meagher’s butterfly records which have stood since 1979-1981 and look in no danger of falling anytime soon. On the men’s side, arguably more impressive are Thorpe and Phelps, who have have a similar thing going on with their pet events, in particular Phelps’ 15y 200m butterfly at 1:54.93 and Thorpe’s 15 and 16 400m records at 3:44.35 and 3:41.83. Both Thorpe and Phelps’ best times as 15 year olds were faster than the silver medal winning times at this year’s World Championships (Korzeniowski-1:55.01 and Hagino 3:44.82), despite 13-15 years of progression. I could see those records standing for several decades, unless another super-freak comes along.

bb – once awarded by USA Swimming, that would be number 164. For this list, we focused on ones that had been awarded, because it’s happened at least once that we know of that a record has been broken and never recognized by USA Swimming for one reason or another.
We know Michael Andrew will break many 13/14 NAG records in the next months but when I see the US age group rankings made by USA swimming each week, I’m really impressed by the 11, 12 and 13-year-old boys like Ethan Dang, Vinny Marciano, Destin Lasco, Carson Foster, Isaac Grinberg, Matthew Limbacher, Andrew Trepanier, Yezan Alsader, Simon Lamar, Reece Whitley or Max Miranda. They are crazy fast. I know probably only a few of them will be future stars but their times are impressive.
