Highlighted by 12 event victories for the women and nine for the men, the Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs delivered a tremendous performance in their victory over Cleveland State at the Beeghly Natatorium on Saturday.
The women defeated conference foe Cleveland State, 199-94, while the men earned a victory over the Vikings, 167-127. This win marks the men’s third-straight victory as they remain undefeated this season.
Both the women and men started the meet off strong winning the 200 medley relay. The women’s squad made up of Anna Kozinska, Oliwia Kaniak, Allison Ramirez Romero, and Madelyn Mahoney finished first with a time of 1:49.62. The men’s team of Rares Druga, James Slessor, Aleksa Radenovic, and Darren Laing earned their victory with a time of 1:31.75.
Freshman Miriam Frass continued her impressive season earning three individual event victories in the 200, 500, and 1000 free. She finished first in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.36. She clocked a 5:10.64 in the 500 free and swam a 10:47.13 in the 1000 free in her victories.
Kaniak finished first in both breaststroke events winning the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.91 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.44. She also finished second in the 200 IM, clocking a 2:13.27.
Kayla Wrasman earned victories in both diving events, scoring a 237.75 to finish first in the one-meter and a 233.85 to win the three-meter.
Kozinska, Ramirez Romero, Jordan Truelsch, and Macy Wang also picked up individual victories for the Penguins. Kozinska was first in the 100 back with a time of 58.93 while Truelsch touched first in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.62. Ramirez Romero swam a 59.93 to win the 100 fly, and Wang clocked a 2:11.12 in her victory in the 200 IM. Wang also finished second in the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:08.18 and 2:27.65, respectively.
Kozinska finished second in the 200 back with a time of 2:23.68. Ramirez Romero also picked up a second-place victory as she swam a 2:12.51 in the 200 fly.
Gunnhildur Baldursdottir finished second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:55.00. Hannah Olger clocked a 25:07 in the 50 free to place second.
For the men, Radenovic won three individual events: 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200 IM. He swam times of 49.00 and 1:48.38 in the 100 fly and 200 fly, respectively. In his win in the 200 IM, he clocked a 1:53.45.
Slessor won bon both the 100 and 200 breast with times of 56.32 and 2:07.05, respectively. He also earned a second-place finish in the 200 IM, clocking a 1:55.36.
Druga finished first in the 50 free with a time of 20.93 while Wilson Cannon placed second in the event with a time of 21.46. Cannon also placed second in the 100 fly, clocking a 50.63.
Soma Albert placed second in both the 100 and 200 back with times of 51.36 and 1:50.84, respectively. Gavin Webb also earned two second-place victories in the 500 and 1000 free. He clocked a 4:42.10 in the 500 free and a 9:38.85 in the 1000 free.
Simon Iwanonkiw earned a victory in the three-meter dive with a score of 261.83 while Brooks Adams won the one-meter dive, scoring a 237.90. Cody Thill was second in both diving events scoring a 253.13 in the three-meter and a 225.45 in the one-meter.
The Penguins will see a break in action before the diving team makes its way to the three-day West Virginia Invite in Morgantown, W.Va. beginning on Thursday, November 17.
The swimming and diving programs will return to action together as they head to the three-day Miami (OH) Invitational at the Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio beginning on Thursday, December 1.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Cleveland State had a quick turnaround after swimming less than 24 hours ago at home as the Green and White went on the road to compete at Youngstown State. The Vikings dropped the Horizon League dual meet by a score of 199-94.
Madison Taker took home the first victory of the day in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.09. Later in the meet, the sophomore was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly after clocking a 1:00.02.
Rachel Contich claimed a victory in the 50-yard freestyle, sprinting to a time of 24.97. The senior also turned in runner-up finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.92) and 500-yard freestyle (5:11.43).
The Vikings went one and two in the 100-yard freestyle with Grace Chelf (53.45) and Ana Sofia Sousa (54.12).
Chelf, a freshman also turned in a second-place finish during the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.33.
In diving, Brooke Eichel placed second in 3-meter with a score of 216.45 and was third in 1-meter with a score of 203.93.
Cleveland State ended the meet on a high note as the team of Chelf, Sousa, Contich, and Taker won the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:37.61.

The Vikings will conclude the calendar year with the annual three-day Magnus Cup event from November 17-19 inside Busbey Natatorium. Prelims will be at 9 a.m. with finals at 5 p.m. each day.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Vikings went on the road for the first time this season and fell to Youngstown State 167-127 in a Horizon League dual.
Jackson Nester won a pair of events on the day as the sophomore started out the individual swimming portion with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle after clocking a 9:36.53. Later in the day, he touched first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.21.
The Viking went one and two in the 200-yard freestyle with Nathen Eberhardt (1:42.60) and Connor Green (1:143.51).
In the 100-yard backstroke, Kenny Thomas won the event after touching the wall in 51.04.
Paddy Johnston won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.64 and then turned in a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:49.90.
Spencer Tussing touched the wall in 4:40.99 to claim the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Green and White also got runner-up finishes from Griffin Manning (57.63) in the 100-yard breaststroke and Reno James (2:08.38) in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Cleveland State ended the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Eberhardt, Tussing, Thomas, and Johnston finishing in 3:06.72.
