The 2022 Portuguese Junior & Senior Nationals wrapped up on Sunday, December 9th, but not before several notable performances were thrown down in Leiria.
World Junior Record holder Diogo Ribeiro highlighted the men’s races, with the 18-year-old putting his sprinting prowess on full display.
For starters, Ribeiro was a member of the record-breaking men’s 4x50m freestyle relay from Benfica. He joined Miguel Duarte Nascimento, Diogo Costa and Miguel Marques to collectively clock a swift time of 1:26.91.
Nascimento led off in 21.22 before Santos took over with a split of 22.62. Marques sealed up the 3rd leg in 21.75 before Ribeiro brought it home with an anchor of 21.32.
The foursome’s effort obliterated the previous Portuguese national standard of 1:28.66 that was put on the books at the 2011 European Short Course Championships.
For his own part, Nascimento’s opening 21.22 established a new national record, easily overwriting the 21.57 he produced in December 2020.
His effort renders Nascimento the world’s 15th fastest man in the SCM 50 free this season.

Ribeiro was also a critical component of the Benfica men’s 4x100m free relay, with his joining teammates Marques, Costa and Nascimento to produce a gold medal-worthy result of 3:12.81.
Ribeiro clocked the swiftest opening leg of the entire field by far, punching a 100m mark of 46.65. That not only helped his relay top the podium in a new Portuguese record of 3:12.81, but the teen’s time also checked in as a new national record by itself.
Opening in 22.35 and closing in 24.30, Ribeiro’s new lifetime best of 46.65 hacked over half a second off of Nascimento’s previous national standard of 47.26 logged 2 years ago.
Rebeiro’s individual split now ranks him 15th in the world on the season.

Rebeiro is the reigning World Junior Record holder in the boys’ long course 50m butterfly, having produced a time of 22.96 at this year’s World Junior Championships.
Additional Notes
- Gabriel Lopes conquered his own national record en route to winning the men’s 100m back national title. The Olympian stopped the clock in a rapid mark of 50.82, getting under the 51-second threshold for the first time in his career. Lopes split 24.35/26.47 to dip under his own previous NR of 51.30 established just last month.
- The women’s 1500m free saw Angelica Andre get it done for gold, with the 28-year-old producing a time of 16:07.07 to win the race. Andre entered the meet with a personal best of 16:18.04 from 5 years ago, meaning she hacked nearly 11 seconds off of that previous career-quickest result.
- 17-year-old Tomas Sarreira topped the junior boys’ 1500m freestyle podium, with the teen logging a winning outing of 15:36.63. His swim rendered him at the wall just under 20 seconds ahead of the next-fastest swimmer.
