Winter Juniors Qualifier Courtney Harris Sends Verbal to Houston

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Courtney Harris from O’Fallon, Missouri has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Houston’s class of 2024. A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Fort Zumwalt West High School, Harris will join fellow verbal commits Grace Butcher, Hannah Farmer, Maddie Wallin, Saige Kemeny, and Sophie Anderson in the fall of 2020.

Harris won the 100 free (50.93) and was runner-up in the 50 (23.76) at the 2019 Missouri MSHSAA Girls Class 2 State Championships. In club swimming, where she represents Rec Plex Sharks, she competed at 2018 Winter Juniors West in the 50/100/200 free. In March, she swam the 50/100/200 free, 100 back, and 100 fly at Columbia Sectionals, finaling in the 50 free (5th with 23.56), 100 free (5th with 51.50), and 200 free (8th with 1:53.63). This summer she competed at Jenx Sectionals and picked up a new time in the LCM 200 back to make finals. She was also a finalist in the 50 free (6th, 26.93), 100 free (8th, 59.18), and 200 free (30th, 2:11.81).

Harris will join a strong sprint group in Houston. Two of the Cougars on the 2018-19 squad (Kenzie Leehy and Zarena Brown) were sub-23 in the 50 free and sub-49 in the 100 free. Six more broke 23.5 in the 50 and three more were sub-51 in the 100. Houston won the 2019 AAC Championships by just over 300 points. Leehy and Kathryn Power were A-finalist in the 50, while Brown and Leehy went 1-2 in the 100 free final, while Power finished 7th. Brown is a senior this season but Harris will spend a year with Leehy and Power, Samantha Medlin, all of whom are juniors.

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Houston. Thank you so much to my family, friends, and coaches who all helped me along the way. I can’t wait to be a cougar ❤️🐾”
