Tonight, in the championship final of the women’s 50 free, Abbey Weitzeil of Canyons Aquatics clocked the all-time fastest American textile performance, improving upon her fastest American textile swim from last night.
See the American all-time rankings below:
- Dara Torres: 24.07 (2008 Beijing Olympics)
- Amanda Weir: 24.23 (2009 World Championships)
- Abbey Weitzeil: 24.28 (2016 Olympic Trials finals)
- Simone Manuel: 24.33 (2016 Olympic Trials finals)
- Madison Kennedy: 24.39 (2016 Olympic Trials semis)
That time holds Weitzeil as the sixth-fastest swimmer this year in the world rankings, behind only Cate Campbell (or, if you’ve been keeping up with our Australian coverage, C1) with 23.84, Ranomi Kromowidjojo with 24.07, Sarah Sjostrom with 24.17, Fran Halsall with 24.21, and Bronte Campbell (C2) with 24.24.
(On a completely unrelated note, and speaking of Sjostrom, the Swedish sprinting wonder would have placed third in tonight’s race with her 50 BUTTERFLY time from the 2014 Swedish Championships, a world record 24.43.)
Weitzeil will take on the 50 free, the 100 free (53.28), and the 400 free relay in Rio.
At 2012 Olympic trials Abbey went 56.6 and didn’t qualify in the 50. 4 years with Coley and she’s st 53.2 and 24.2, winning both events. Pretty cool progression.
56.6 Is still badass at 15. But yeah Coley’s an evil genius, mad scientist. They got a real good thing going
Wow, and good for both of those girls. It must be hard to chase a 100% completely clean American Record that was coached by a 100% completely clean coach.
I see what you did there!
But Weitzeil is a dwarf! Them Aussies are giants!
News flash!
Abbey Weitzeil 5’10”
Libby Trickett 5’6″
Multiple WRs, multiple Olympics and Worlds champion
Jodie Henry 5’9″
Multiple WRs, multiple Olympics and Worlds champion
Bronte Campbell 5’10
Second fastest ever, multiple Worlds champion.
You can present these facts a million times, and yet somebody will keep chirping that the reason the Aussie lassies are good at sprinting is because they are tall giants which make Weitzeil and Manuel look like kids.
Cate Campbell 1.86m (6’10”)
WR holder in the 100 free. US still has some work 🙂
Typo 6’1″ not 6’10” that would be scary 🙂
LOL LOL LOL Great comeback!

i hope she will upset some top seed swimmers to win silver or bronze in both distances……moreover her performance in 100m freestyle is more relieving for medley…..great times ahead for the US sprinters in world stage as she and Manuel both are only 19 years of age…
From your mouth to God’s ear!
