UTPB Swimming head coach Cameron Kainer has announced the addition of Sam Knapp to the team’s coaching staff for 2015-16.
Knapp was a 4 year varsity swimmer at D-II Wingate University out of Wingate, NC. During his career there he had 6 All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference swims to go along with 3 conference championships the Bulldogs won in his 4 years.
In the 2013-14 season he was named an Honorable mention Academic All-American, and in his senior year received the D II ADA Academic Achievement Award. Knapp was voted a team captain in his last year and also served as the team representative on the SAAC from 2012-2015.
With the rest of his teammates at Wingate, Knapp volunteered each year with the local Special Olympics program hosted annually by the swim team. He finished his career with the 2nd fastest 200yd back and the 3rd fastest 100yd back in program history.
In the summer of 2015 Knapp was selected to represent Puerto Rico at the 19thCentral American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Championships in Barbados, finishing 6th in the 50m, 4th in the 100m, and 2nd in the 200m backstrokes.
Sam is from Madison, Ala. and graduated from Bob Jones High School. He graduated magna cum laude with university honors in May 2015 from Wingate University, receiving a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Sports Management.
