LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego’s swim and dive squads defeated both Claremont-Mudd-Scripps squads in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
The Triton women posted a final score of 196 and the men posted a 181.5 score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Women
Before the start of the meet, the Triton women were recognized with their 2022 MPSF conference championship rings. They are the first team to win a conference championship for UC San Diego in the Division I era.
The Triton women won 28 events out of 32. Opening the meet in the 200-yard medley relay, they set a pool record. Jordan Phillips, Katja Pavicevic, Miranda Renner, and Tina Reuter posted a 1:41.63 time. The same squad holds the team record in the event. In the 1000-yard free, UC San Diego took the first four places with senior Juli Arzave taking first with freshmen Sophia Bell, Emma Keith-Brown, and Lena Siering taking the next three spots. Another notable freshman is Sabrina Bennani who took second in the 200-yard breaststroke and third in the 200-yard freestyle. Also, in the 200-yard freestyle, seniors Aneta Wyzga and Katja Pavicevic took first and second. Wyzga came within two seconds of the pool record of 2018. Freshman Chloe Braun, earned 12 points for the Tritons in three events, taking second and third in individual events and then second in the 200-yard medley relay.
In diving, senior Isabella Perez took third in the one-meter dive with a score of 187.35. Perez took second in the three-meter dive with a score of 235.58. She earned seven points for the Tritons.
Men
On the men’s side, the squad also took first in 28 events. An upperclassmen-led 200-yard medley relay team took 11 points out of the gate for the Tritons. Andrija Petkovic, Luke Pusateri, Chad Morrison, and Justin Morsch posted a 1:31.55 time, finishing a full three seconds ahead of any CMS squads. Sophomore Nathan Lee took earned nine points in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing first with a time of 50.37 seconds. Returning for his fifth year, Ivan Kurakin led the Tritons in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.58. In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Robby Griswold posted a 1:51.10 time to finish ahead two of his teammates and three CMS swimmers. Taking on the 500-yard freestyle, three underclassmen led for the Tritons. Sophomore Devin Esser took first followed by freshman Luigi Franco and sophomore Jackson Bernstein, taking the first three places, they earned 16 points between them.
Diver Kyle Parenti took third in the one-meter dive with a score of 243.45. He then took first in the three-meter dive with a score of 259.8. He earned 12 points for the Tritons.
QUOTABLE
“Being able to celebrate our women’s championship team from last season was a great start to the meet,” head coach Marko Djordjevic commented. “Having our athletic director, Earl Edwards, hand out rings to each individual means so much to our team. I am grateful we had a stand full of fans to help celebrate a historic team.”
Speaking about the opening event, Djordjevic added, “starting the meet with a new pool record set us up for a very successful day.” He added, “swimming at this level, this early in the season only boosts our confidence for the rest of the year, and validates all the hard work we did this pre-season.”

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sophomore Izzy Doud, a returning honorable mention All-American, won the three-meter dive by just .37 (235.95 to 235.58) and Makenna Parkinson edged Doud by just .53 in the one-meter (201.98 to 201.45) to highlight the opening day performance of the CMS women’s swimming and diving team at Division I UC San Diego on Saturday.
Doud barely edged out Isabella Perez of UC San Diego to take first in the three-meter, with Parkinson finishing third. The one-meter battle was just as close between the two Athenas, but Parkinson was able to edge out Doud by a half-point, with Perez in third.
In the swimming events, Jameson Mitchum was third in the 200 back with a 2:11.11, and Mackenzie Mayfield was third in the 100 breast in 1:05.98. Ally Rudolph was just .05 out of fourth in the 50 free with a 25.08, while Annika Sharma had a 54.08 in the 100 free to come in a close fourth. Lexi Lee added a fourth place finish in the 200 breast in 2:36.93.
Quinn Katayama-Stall, Mayfield, Sharma and Rudolph were part of a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, touching the wall in 1:49.48. Mayfield, Sharma, Rudolph and Lexi Punishill swam the 200 free relay and came in just under the 1:40 mark, finishing in 1:39.99.
CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it has its SCIAC opener at Occidental on Nov. 5.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team opened its 2022-23 season at Division I UC San Diego and had a strong showing, including a 200 fly win from defending national champion Frank Applebaum, at the Canyonview Aquatics Center.
The Tritons ended up with a 181.5-113.5 victory over the Stags, who also saw a tight win by less than a second from returning All-American Lucas Lang in the 1000 free (9:35.74 to 9:36.30) and a one-meter diving victory from Jack Griffith, who had 259.50 points.
Applebaum won the national title in the 200 fly last year by setting a new NCAA Division III record with a 1:44.01, and started his new campaign with a 1:52.74, which was good enough to win the race by a half-second over teammate Henrik Barck. The 1-2 finish was the top showing for the Stags in any swimming event on the day, with Tyler Headley also picking up two points with a fourth-place finish. Applebaum was also second in the 100 fly in 51.16 seconds, while Barck added another runner-up in the 400 IM in 4:06.75.
The Stags also had a similar 1-2-4 finish in the one-meter dive, when Griffith was followed by Ethan Sattley in second and Ben Smith taking fourth. Gaylord added a runner-up in the three-meter, with Sattley coming in third.
CMS opened the meet with a 1:34.62 in the 200 medley relay with Anderson Breazeale, Evan Deedy, Frank Applebaum and Theo Johnson taking the back, breast, fly and free legs, respectively. Korin Aldam-Tajima had a strong first swim in the 100 back, taking second place in 51.90, finishing just .06 ahead of third-place Shane Burns of UC San Diego.
Theo Johnson tied for second in the 50 free with a time of 21.62, and Steven Tran added a runner-up finish in the 200 breast in 2:07.57. Jeremy Tan, Eric Workman, Breazeale and Johnson finished off the meet with a 1:26.34 in the 200 free relay.
CMS will be back in action on Nov. 5 when it travels to Occidental for its SCIAC opener.
