Trenton Julian Posts 1:54.71 200 Fly In Irvine, A Time That Would Have Made US Olympic Roster

2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Trenton Julian posted a 1:54.71 en route to a win in the 200 butterfly in Irvine. Julian finished 7th in the event at 2024 US Olympic Trials in a 1:57.07 and it took a 1:55.08 to make the US Olympic team.

Julian had a much different race strategy tonight than he did at US Olympic Trials. In Indianapolis, he was out fast and had a 10 second fall off between his two-100s. Tonight, he only had a 5.5 second difference between his first and 2nd 100. He did not go with the “fly and die” strategy tonight.

2024 Trials Final Irvine
50 25.04 25.86
100 28.29 28.66
150 29.79 29.46
200 33.95 30.73
1:57.07 1:54.71

Tonight’s swim also was Julian’s 3rd fastest of his career. He only was faster at 2022 International Team Trials as he swam a 1:54.34 in prelims and a 1:54.22 in finals.

Julian missed the Olympic team again after a 5th place finish in 2020(1) and now a 7th place finish. His time from tonight would have been 2nd at US Olympic Trials last month and only 0.01 behind Thomas Heilman who won in a 1:54.70. Luca Urlando was 2nd in a 1:55.08 to earn the 2nd spot for the US in Paris.

His time notably also tied his time that he swam three years ago at the Summer Championships, once again swimming faster post-Trials after missing the team.

Another swims you might have missed was from Miami-Florida commit for this fall Marissa Inouye posted a huge best time in the 800 free with a 8:46.89, dropping from her previous best time of a 9:03.49. She ended up finishing 6th after swimming out of the afternoon heats.

David Sammons of SwimMAC cracked the 2:00 mark in the boys 200 fly for the first time with a 1:59.72 for 7th. Sammons came into the meet with a lifetime best of a 2:00.78 from May. He now has dropped over four seconds in the last year as his best coming into this summer was a 2:04.11 from July 2023.

15 year old Mia Su of Santa Clara Swim Club swam a 1:09.43 for 4th in the 100 breast. Su came into the meet with a best time of a 1:10.17.

Its possible since Mission Viejo has a lot of kid swimmers as well. Well, knowing Mission Viejo they probably thought gee we could have gotten an American on the Olympic team if he swam that time at trials. Now, its kind of a missed shot since he is 24 years old now and will be about 29 for LA.

Trenton came back and immediately started training after the trails, intent to have a good meet in Irvine. He has and he will. 29 is not too old to succeed in swimming at LA 28. My money is on Trenton on the podium!!

Trenton Julian was added to the US SafeSport database in May 2022 (link: https://swimswam.com/u-s-world-championship-team-member-added-to-u-s-safesport-database/). Many, although not all, swimmers added to this database are added because of allegations of sexual misconduct, including those of child abuse. Details of how SafeSport works / reasons people can be added can be found here: https://swimswam.com/digging-in-on-safesports-investigative-process-ban-terminology/ Regardless, many find it sketchy that Julian was added only briefly and then taken off, with no description of the reason for his addition being provided other than “Allegations of Misconduct” to this day. In combination with his dad being a powerful coach, many find the situation uncomfortable and wish they had more information on what happened, why he was added in… Read more »

A no pressure race & he crushed it.
Opposed to trials. Never discount the tremendous pressure of USA Trials.

Who would’ve guessed that the best 200s are swam by not going out idiotically fast on the first 50?
