Towson Wins 26 Events In Sweep of Howard

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams posted 26 combined wins to come away with the sweep against the Howard Bison at Burr Natatorium in Washington, D.C. Monday afternoon. The Tiger women won 191-90 and the men’s team won 178-102.

The Towson women won 11 of 13 individual events and both relays, including two wins each from Bridget ThomasAlly Frame and Tiffany Matulis.

The Tiger men won 12 of 13 individual events and one of two relays, including three individual wins from Brian Benzing and two from Sean Colson.

How it Happened

For the Women:

  • Shannon Parrau won the 1-meter dive with a score of 264.90. Abby O’Leary finished second with 240.55 points.
  • Ally FrameTiffany MatulisRiley Willett and Claire Ryland took first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:45.44.
  • Bridget Thomas (10:33.74), Dylan Gustaff (10:52.19) and Britney Denny (10:54.61) swept the podium in the 1000 free.
  • Addie Scott won the 200 free with a time of 1:54.85. Marissa Kleckner (1:58.94) and Victoria Dichak (1:59.85) finished behind in second and third.
  • Frame clocked in at 26.76 in the 50 back to take the top spot.
  • Matulis won the 50 breast at 30.07 with two Bison swimmers right behind her.
  • Willett (58.33) and Samantha Casolo (59.08) took second and third in the 100 fly.
  • Ryland (24.61) and Janine Murphy (24.65) finished 1-2 in the 50 free.
  • Murphy was the runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 54.46. Kleckner finished third (54.77).
  • Frame picked up her second win of the day in the 100 back after posting a 57.50.
  • Matulis clocked in at 1:06.10 in the 100 breast for her second win.
  • Thomas won the 500 free with a time of 5:09.61. Dichak finished second (5:21.20).
  • Willett won the 50 fly with a time of 26.91. Casolo finished second at 27.35.
  • Maddie Frick won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.18.
  • Kleckner, Murphy, Scott and Ryland took first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.07.

For the Men:

  • Evan BotaBrian Benzing, Ben Eischeid and Daniel McLaughlin took the top spot in the 200 medley with a time of 1:30.83.
  • Teddy Ament (9:54.73), Blakely Dean (10:09.05) and Christian Johnson (10:11.85) finished 1-2-3 in the 1000 free.
  • Sean Colson won the 200 free with a time of 1:44.56. David Walton finished second at 1:46.10.
  • Bota placed first in the 50 back with a time of 23.61.
  • Benzing took the top spot in the 50 breast at 24.88.
  • Eischeid finished third in the 100 fly with a time of 51.32.
  • Luke Schwar took the top spot in the 50 free with a time of 21.38.
  • Aidan Clark won the 1-meter dive with a score of 303.90.
  • Schwar took first in the 100 free with a 47.17 for his second individual victory of the day.
  • Colson won the 100 back after posting a 51.66.
  • Benzing won the 100 breast with a time of 54.10 for his second breaststroke win of the night.
  • Ament (4:47.48) and Blakely Dean (4:51.91) finished 1-2 in the 500 free.
  • Benzing took first in the 50 free with a time of 22.05.
  • Kirill Pankov won the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.92. David Walton finished second (1:56.23).
  • McLaughlin, Schwar, Eischeid and Bearor took second in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:24.58.

On Deck:
Both Towson squads are back to Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) competition against the Drexel Dragons Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11:00 a.m. in Philadelphia.

WASHINGTON (January 15, 2024) – Second-year Bison Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) led the Howard University women’s swimming & diving team with a pair of victories, but the Towson Tigers were too much to overcome on MLK Day, spoiling HU Senior Day, 191-90, at Burr Gym Pool.

On the afternoon, the Maryland native grabbed gold in the 100 Fly (58.17) and 100 Free (52.55).

Rookie Myeisha Sharrieff (Bermuda) claimed silver in the 50 Back (27.06) and 100 Back (58.36) while senior Isabella Fountain (White Plains, N.Y.) took second place in the 50 Breast (30.65). Freshman Chanice Posada (Houston) also took part in the 50 Back (27.07) and 100 Back (58.81), placing third overall in both races.

Junior Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) earned three top 3 finishes on the snowy day: 100 Breast (2nd/1:07.73); 200 IM (2nd/2:12.60) and 50 Breast (3rd/30.73).

Sophomores Skylar Debnam (Chandler, Ariz.) and Kali Garcia (Altamonte, Fla.) and newcomer Jasmine Morgan (Chicago) each secured third place in the 500 Free (5:21.40), 50 Fly (28.17) and 50 Free (25.04), respectively.

On the board, junior Jordynn Connell (Flower Mound, Texas) tallied 211.30 points in the 1-meter dive, placing third overall in the event.

During the event, the women’s squad acknowledged seven Bison for their hard work and dedication to the program and Howard Athletics: Fountain; Kaliyah Albury (Nassau, Bahamas); Karci Gibson (Kingston, Jamaica); Alana Josey (York, Pa.); Michaela Spears (Chicago); Aaliyah Young (Burleson, Texas) and manager Iman Ferguson (New Orleans).

On Jan. 20, Howard travels crosstown to face Catholic. Meet time is slated for 1 p.m.

WASHINGTON (January 15, 2024) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving team wrapped up its home slate with a loss to Towson, 178-102, on MLK Day inside Burr Gym Pool.

Despite the setback, HU earned a pair of wins on the snowy day.

Graduate Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.), seniors Spencer Miles (Lynchburg, Va.) and Tristan Stevens (Chicago) and sophomore Taj Benton (Baltimore) capped off the afternoon with a victory in the 200 Free Relay, clocking in at 1:24.01.

Individually, Stevens took runner-up in the 50 Back (23.65) and 100 Back (51.85) while Benton claimed silver in the 100 Fly (50.65) and 50 Fly (22.73).

Rookie Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) grabbed the only gold individual medal, winning the 100 Fly with a 50.38 time. The Florida native, alongside junior Tai Afrik (Holland, Mich.), also competed in the 100 Free where they placed second (47.84) and third (48.41), respectively.

Other notable performances included senior Mark-Anthony Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) taking second in the 50 Breast (25.87) and third-year Bison Darin Johnson (Atascocita, Texas) earning silver in the 100 Breast (58.00).

On the board, junior Jordan Walker (San Antonio) finished second overall in the 1-meter dive after scoring 243.40 points.

During the event, the men’s squad recognized seven Bison for their hard work and dedication to the program and Howard Athletics: Miles; Stevens; M. Thompson; Ahmad Dove (Fort Washington, Md.); Niles Rankin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.); Langston Weddington (Marietta, Ga.) and manager Iman Ferguson (New Orleans).

On Jan. 20, Howard travels crosstown to face Catholic. Meet time is slated for 1 p.m.
