College (Michigan) 2016-2017 In his freshman season at Michigan, Smachlo finished fourth in the 200 fly (1:43.46), sixth in the 100 fly (46.43) and 18th in the 200 IM (1:45.23) at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. At the NCAA Championships, he placed 25th in the 200 fly (1:43.38) and 31st in the 100 fly (46.52). Smachlo was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American honoree at the end of the year. 2017-2018 In his sophomore season at Michigan, Smachlo finished 16th in the 200 fly (1:42.03) and 33rd in the 100 fly (46.39) at the NCAA Championships. Smachlo placed fifth in the 200 fly (1:43.64), seventh in the 100 fly (46.16) and 10th in the 200 IM (1:45.39) at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis. 2018-2019 Smachlo had a breakout junior year, taking himself from non-scorer at the national level to national contender. Smachlo won the 100 fly title at the Big Ten Championships (44.82), while also finishing fourth in the 200 fly (1:42.73) and 19th in the 50 free (19.72). He was a member of Michigan's Big Ten champion 200 medley relay team, which set a meet record (1:22.76) at the conference meet as well.
