SwimMAC’s Matthew Josa Disqualified in the 200 IM

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Yesterday morning, Cammile Adams‘ DQ in the 200 fly for being too far rotated on one of her turns. That was later overturned, and she secured a spot in the final tonight with a strong semifinal swim last night.

This morning, her SwimMAC teammate Matthew Josa was disqualified in heat 9 of 10 in the men’s 200 IM. The reason cited for his DQ was that he did not finish on his back in the backstroke to breaststroke turn. Josa looked to be fast enough to have qualified through to the semifinals in this event.

There has been much speculation about turns, especially in the IM’s, and especially concerning Ryan Lochte. Officials DQ’d Adams initially for a rotation issue, which is the same thing that they just got Josa for. Lochte tried a new strategy of pushing off and doing dolphin kicks on his back on the breast to free turn, which was minted as the “Lochte Turn,” until FINA outlawed that.

Lochte is the top qualifier in the 200 IM this morning. Chase Kalisz and Will Licon were notable no-shows in this event this morning.
