Baylor School, based in Chattanooga, Tennessee is mourning the loss of fellow classmate, Sumner Smith, who was a Baylor swim team member and in the midst of a routine swim practice on Monday when the incident occurred. Few details of the circumstances are being released, save for the fact that the high school junior was taken by ambulance and police escort to the hospital in the afternoon, only to be pronounced dead later in the evening.

The school confirmed Smith’s passing to students yesterday and is asking the community for prayers for his family. Students are using the Twitter hashtag #SumnerStrong to express support in this tragic time.

Our prayers are sent to everyone. Sumner was a great kid and we are all upset. I am a Baylor student and was there when it happened, so I hope you keep Sumner and his family in your prayers while they go through this rough time. There was nothing they could do more to save him, but he is in a better place now, no matter how much we grieve him.

We all mourn the loss of Sumner, for her family and all who knew her. Sudden cardiac deaths are extremely rare and if cardiac issues are not identified earlier, the cardiac events are often catastrophic. I lost a best friend to this condition many years ago. Hugs out to the family and friends… get checked out athletes with a cardiologist. .. can be life saving precaution.
