Diana Nyad, equipped with her specially-designed jellyfish suit, is making significant progress in her 110-mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida on Sunday morning: 19 hours into her 50+ hour swim.
A storm last night that threatened the swim, at one point it came within 4 miles of the crew, ended up breaking and being a non-issue, though it surely caused some anxious hours.
Overnight, Nyad swam another 25 or so miles, but because of her course so far being a bit off of a direct path, She’s still only maybe a third of the way, by direct distance, to her final destination.
Reports from the crew said that she is “feeling a little weak” on her last feed.
She was examined by her two support doctors at 7:15 eastern time on Sunday morning, who said that her pules is strong and her lungs are clear (they did the inspection while she floated, therefore maintaining the integrity of the swim).
Her shoulders are “sore, but not hurting,” and overnight Nyad vomited every time she drank. Once removing the jellyfish mask in the morning, though, she was able to eat and keep down pasta. Nyad has taken some Tylenol, but no other medicine.
““We’re optimistic,” says Dr. Covington. “She’s looking very good.”
