Stevens, Zanko & Kamminga To Swim-Off For 16th In Men’s 50 Breast

2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Amid all the chaos that saw a world record from Adam Peaty, an African record from Cameron van der Burgh and a South American record from Joao Gomes Junior, there was a little more as three swimmers tied for 16th in the men’s 50 breast preliminaries.

Peter Stevens of Slovenia, Vsevolod Zanko of Russia and Arno Kamminga of the Netherlands all clocked in at 27.39, and will settle it in a three-way swim-off after the men’s 800 free prelims. Only the winner will advance to the semi-finals.

Stevens holds the fastest PB of 27.09, with Zanko close behind at 27.20. Kamminga’s swim actually broke the Dutch Record, previously held by Lennart Stekelenburg at 27.44 from the 2010 European Championships, also held in Budapest. Kamminga’s best previously sat at 27.47 from this season.

This isn’t the first time a three-way swim-off has happened on this stage. In the men’s 50 fly at the 2007 World Championships three men swam off for 16th, with two of them, Slovenian teammates Peter Mankoc and Jernej Godec, tying again in a time of 23.74. After a scratch another swim-off was not required.
