The Central Zone North Sectionals continued on Saturday at the Rochester Recreation Center. The third finals session included the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, and 400 IM.
In the boys’ 200 free, Fox Valley’s Chase Maier touched the wall 1st in 1:36.79. He showcased a strong back half of his race last night, as he opened in 47.35 before closing in 49.44 over the final 100 yards. While it was a dominant win, as he won by over 1.5 seconds, he was a bit shy of his 1:35.91 best time from last month’s IHSA Championship meet. Maier is a member of the class of 2025, and is committed to swim at the U.S. Naval Academy in the fall.
Maier’s teammates also had great nights, with 18-year-olds Tyler Bardak and Keian Lam each bagging wins of their own. Bardak glided into the wall with a time of 1:58.10 to win the boys’ 200 breast. He broke the elusive 2-minute barrier for the first time in prelims, dropping from 2:01.19 to 1:59.76. During his finals swim, he opened with a 26.60, then recorded remarkably consistent splits of 30.29, 30.56, and 30.65 on the final three 50s.
Lam was also in the 200 breast final, finishing 3rd with a time of 1:58.69. He was the top seed entering the event with an entry time of 1:57.79. He went on to win the 400 IM later in the session, clocking a time of 3:53.26, just 2.23 seconds off his fastest-ever time of 3:51.03.
Bardak will head to NC State in the fall, while Lam has opted to continue his career at Princeton.
The only non-Fox Valley individual winner for the boys was St. Charles’ Thomas McMillan, who is only 15 years old. He won the 100 fly comfortably, opening up the first 50 in 22.26 before bringing it home in 25.25. His best time is 46.52, which he posted to win the IHSA state championship last month.
In the 400 medley relay, the McFarland Spartan Sharks’ quartet of Blake Tebeest (49.50), Preston Nygaard (54.90), Cale Tebeest (48.12), and Shane Tebeest (44.99) outlasted Fox Valley by 0.12. They finished in 3:17.51 to Fox Valley’s 3:17.63. Bardak led off Fox Valley in 49.49 with Lam splitting 53.55 on breast and Maier anchoring in 44.32. Peter Carroll joined the three with a 50.27 fly split.
On the girls’ side of things, 15-year-old Rachel Ritter won the 400 IM with a new personal best time of 4:22.20. She was challenged the whole way by 16-year-old Kate Farrell, who finished 2nd overall with a time of 4:23.93. Ritter represents Sioux Falls, while Farrell hails from St. Charles.
Duke commit Quinn White cruised to wall in 1:48.02 to win the 200 free, topping the field by over two full seconds. She was been as quick as 1:46.86 in the event, which she clocked just a few weeks ago. She was out strong through the first 100 in 52.62 before clocking 55.40 over the final four laps. The Shawmut Aquatic Club representative also swam in the 400 IM prelims, where she produced a strong swim of 4:21.21, but ultimately opted out of the final.
Future Stanford Cardinal Ella Jablonski posted a time of 53.74 to clear the 100 fly field. She opened in 25.20 and closed in 28.54, and was very consistent on the day, as she was also 53.80 in the prelims. She owns a career-quickest mark of 52.08 in the discipline.
Michigan Lakeshore’s Sophia Umstead, a Virginia commit, punched a time of 2:11.18 to win the 200 breast. With that performance, she slid under her previous lifetime best of 2:11.62.
Umstead also swam on Michigan Lakeshore’s victorious 400 medley relay, splitting 1:00.71 on the breast leg. Camryn Siegers (55.98 – back), Ellie Todd (54.88 – fly), and Madison Ensing (50.59 – free) contributed to post a final time of 3:42.16. The foursome won the event by 2.3 seconds.
