ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure University men’s and women’s swimming head coach Mike Smiechowski has announced the addition of Matthew Lowe as the new associate head coach.
“We are thrilled to add Matt to our coaching staff,” Smiechowski said. “He brings a depth of knowledge and experience that will be critical to the growth of our program. He has had massive success coaching student-athletes to national relevance at the mid-major level and we look forward to having him bring that skill set to Bona’s.”
Lowe joins the Bonnies coaching staff after spending the past season as the assistant coach and director of operations at Army West Point, helping the Black Knights to their first win over Navy in over 30 years.
Also during his time at West Point, Lowe developed a full season coaching plan for the men’s distance swimmers, including the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000/1650 freestyle and 400 individual medley.
Prior to his season with Army, he served as an assistant coach and men’s recruiting coordinator at Towson University from 2017-22.
With the Tigers, Lowe helped produce the only two men’s swimmers in Towson history to score at the NCAA Championships and helped develop the squad’s first-ever U.S. National Team member, Jack Saunderson. He also helped lead the Tigers to their first Colonial Athletic Association championship in 2021.
Between the two teams, the Tigers broke 48 program records, posted over 100 top-10 program times and broke three CAA records during his tenure in Maryland.
Lowe also served as the head coach of the 14-U team at Loyola Blakefield Aquatics from 2017-18.
Lowe was a decorated student-athlete at Towson from 2011-15, winning a pair of CAA championships in the 1650-freestyle in 2014 and 2015, while finishing runner-up in the 500-freestyle in 2015.
At the international level, Lowe swam for the Bahamas National Team at World Championships twice, representing his home country in Barcelona, Spain in 2013 and Budapest, Hungary in 2017. He also swam at the Open Water Olympic Qualifiers in 2016 in Setubal, Portugal. He holds the Bahamian National Team records in the 800-freestyle, 1500-freestyle and 400-medley relay.
Lowe graduated from Towson in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Congrats Matt! St. Bonaventure is lucky to have you!
