Sprint News 5/8/12: Lochte Loves his Mom; Cali ‘State’ Meets Kick Off

…Lithuanian budding star Ruta Meilutyte continued to rock at the British Southwest & Senior Championships this past weekend. Meilutyte is the British-trained 15-year old (with a birthday just three weeks ago) who rocked the Olympic Trials with a 1:07.30 in the 100 breaststroke. Representing Plymouth Leander, she broke another Lithuanian National Mark, with a 2:02.68 in the 200 free – destroying the 2:04.00 held by Jurate Scerbinskaite last month. That time is comparable to what the best 15 year olds in the US go (think Kylie Stewart or Simone Manuel), and what’s ven more frightening is that she’s clearly in big training. We know that because her 2:12.2 in the 100 breaststroke was a full five seconds slower than her best. That means that on a taper, Meilutyte might be a sub-two minute swimmer at only 15. That’s good. She also broke the Lithuanian 17 & under record in the 100 back with a 1:04.19, punctuating it by saying afterward that she “still (doesn’t) know how to swim backstroke”…

Ryan Lochte was in New York City today filming for the Today Show, as Olympians paid tribute to their moms. This was a more lighthearted affair that Michael Phelps’ 60 minutes interview, but still fun to see…

…One of the best “state meets” in the country kicks off today as the California Southern Sectional Championships begin (though it’s not technically a “state” contest). This meet is usually good for a National Record or two, and is always a highlight of unbelievable swimming. Among the highlights this year – a freshman at Saugus named Abbey Weitzeil who’s already been a 50.91 in the 100 free. Full psych sheets for all 4 divisions are available here

Wow!
This Ruta Meiluyte may turn out to be a future huge star. Not many can swim that fast in free and breast combo. She has huge potentials in 200 IM, and I thought she was only great in breast.
She maybe a bolter in London, similar to what Jones did in Sydney, who also just turned 15.

Man, that picture (and its comment) made me think Ruta Meilutyte looked a looot like Ryan Lochte.

California North Coast Section Championships (NCS) are May 18/19. This weekend are the league championships, including one of the powerhouse leagues in the state: Diablo Foothill Athletic League (DFAL).

Don’t forget about the California North Coast and Central Coast Section championships, which are also happening this weekend. Usually the winning times in these meets are just as fast as the Southern Section ones. The Central Coast section should be especially stacked this year on the women’s side with Jasmine Tosky and Rachael Acker (as well as some noteable others) throwing down for their senior seasons.

North Coast and Central Coast Section are next weekend, not this upcoming weekend. And agreed, especially when considering the number of potential athletes they are able to draw from, NCS and CCS usually blows away Southern Section for quality of swims.
