As some have said here , Lochte is not the lochte of even 2010 ! since that year , for me , he is just to another level in many events ! We just don’t know right now where Ryan is . Freaks among the freaks is really the profile he is following . 11 gold medals he has gathered between december 2010 and august 2011 ! this shows he will be ready for many events in great shape . So the showdown with Phelps will be huge and better than ever . we can be happy Tyler Clary is in the mix to put some pressure as well in the IM’s at Omaha . Yipiiiiii

This article seems to be capturing a lot of attention and for a good reason. I’ve read through the threads and now that a few more Grand Prixs are in the history books, and the Longhorn Aquatic Elite Invitational Psych sheet released for this weekend, let’s continue on this…

Phelps will swim the 400 IM at Trials. There is not a doubt in my mind after the 4:12 he put up at the Indy Grand Prix. It is true, Clary is there and he and Lochte will both be fully tapered at Trials. The two of them put up 4:07’s at last years Worlds so don’t be surprised if these three post a 4:05 or even under come Trials. Bowman… Read more »

I agree with a lot of what you said Kevin, but not all. I think that Lochte will have the ability to make all the events he needs to, and still drop more in London. See, for example, the Nationals-Pan Pacs double in 2010.

Also what we saw from him, and his teammates, in Charlotte is that they don’t have to taper to drop a ton of time. The Gator swimmers seemed to be rested a little at that Grand Prix, and we saw what that did to their times. Lochte did a 1:57 200 IM by just suiting up. I think the effect if they come down from the huge numbers they’re doing (has to be well over 100k/week)… Read more »

I have been following this story for some time and feel I can comment on this firstly as a neutral from the UK secondly as a fan and thirdly as an admirer of rare talent.
Should Michael Phelps compete in the 400 iM? The question should read Would he even want to if he wins selection? I think MP is already preparing himself mentally for a 3rd successive gold in this event whilst at the same time contemplating the distinct possibility that he might indeed fail. He will have thought this through weighed up the odds and like any other person motivated by success will relish the chance of one more chance to be on that Podium. Whether he… Read more »

I have tickets to the session with the 400 IM final, so naturally I’m hoping that the consensus on here is right, and that he competes. We’ll just have to wait until the trials to see what he does.

I am enjoying the anticipation. I think Mike is destined to set some marks at this games that won’t be touched for a while (see records such as Evans 400/1,500 FR…Barrowman 200 BR). It depends on what Mr. Bowman thinks he has the best chance in setting those marks. Personally, if there is anybody that could break 4 in the 4IM, I think it’s Mike. I know that sounds crazy, but Mr. Bowman has been working with this kid since he was 12 – the man is a planner and extremely intelligent in terms of long term training – obviously. I also think that if there is anyone to break 1:50 in the 2FL, Phelps is the man. I’ve rooted… Read more »

calling Michael „Mike” sounds so awkward…

I think people are not giving Lochte enough credit here. Yeah he has to swim back to back events in one day, and in the past has not been a favorite to win the 400 I.M. but his training lately has been utterly insane, he’s morphed into this athletic freak, “a freak among freaks, among freaks!” And unlike Phelps his training has been relentless and consistantly increased in intensity whereas Phelps has reportedly skipped pool time weeks at a time,. I agree Phelps is looking good and is on track to do well but given Lochte’s training and performance at last year’s world champs I think he’s going to shock the world at the Olympics and Eclipse Phelps. “Bank on… Read more »

It seems very difficult to predict where Lochte will be at OTs and OGs. His in season swims are usually so much slower in comparison to other elite swimmers. I am not doubting his performance on the main stage because he always rises to the occasion.

Any clue on his trials agenda? Will he swim the 100 free to make his case for the 4 x 100 FR? Will he swim the 100 back? Lastly, what will his Charlotte performances tell us?

I teh the ultra swim will show us how beat up he is.. he has been doing a lot of hard training.. I am intersted in seeing him times.

My predictions for Trials for Ryan 200/400IM, 100/200Free 100/200bk and possibly the 100 fly. Have three races 29th and the 30th could be tough

Im excited to see what he decides to swim.

I just dont think people should count him out..

Phelps was the definition of a freak growing up. 6 years STRAIGHT no days off. That’s what dedication is. Despite his revved up training Lochte still hasn’t caught up to Phelps’ textitle times in the 400IM in a textile suit.

I think Phelps will want to swim the 400 IM because being in the stands watching that race will be something he can’t face.

Then he will remember how much it hurts to swim two world class 400 IMs in the same day and say, “You know what, I’m good over here. You guys can have it”. As much as I would l love to see the 400IM out of him in London, I would much rather see gold in the 100/200 fly, WRs in each. 200FR/200IM probable gold, WR in 200IM. 400Med, let’s hope they can figure it out without Peirsol leading off and the 800 FR Relay.

He had the potential to put that 200 fly so far out of reach, it’s not even funny. Provided his Back to the Future goggles don’t fall off, we could see something huge. Same goes… Read more »

I think coacherik brings up a good point that there’s two different questions to be asked – will he swim it in OMAHA and will he swim it in LONDON. I think the answer to the first is almost certainly ‘yes’, and then the second will be determined depending on how the first went.

I think he might swim it in Omaha, either to make a point or to gauge where he’s at. But I just cannot see him swimming it in London.
