Spencer Nicholas, #14 in Class of 2024, Hands Verbal Commitment to UVA

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Spencer Nicholas, a junior at Martin Luther King High School in Nashville, Tennessee, has announced his intention to swim and study at the University of Virginia beginning in the fall of 2024. He wrote on social media:

“I’m honored and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Virginia! Thank you to everyone who made this possible, including my parents, teammates, current and future coaches, and anyone else who has helped me through this process. GO HOOS⚔️”

Nicholas is ranked 14th on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ recruits from the high school class of 2024. He trains with Nashville Aquatic Club and specializes in the 100 back/100 fly. He is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and was named Southeastern Swimming LSC “Most Outstanding Male” in 2021 for his LCM 50 fly.

At the Tennessee TISCA Championships last February, the then-sophomore won the 100 fly (47.47) and was runner-up in the 100 back (48.29); both were lifetime best times. A month later, he competed at Southern Premier and placed 7th in the 100 back, 14th in the 100 breast, 6th in the 100 fly, 12th in the 200 IM, and 16th in the 400 IM. He finished the meet with PBs in the 100 free, 100 breast, and 400 IM.

Nicholas kicked off long course season at the All-American Spring Classic with best times in the 200 free (2:00.13) and 100 breast (1:09.81). He added PBs in the 100/200 fly (55.42/2:08.02) a month later at the Martha McKee Charlotte Open, and in the 50 free (23.85), 100 free (52.57), 100 fly (54.80), and 400 IM (4:36.63) at the NAC Summer Sizzler in June. He also competed at the Southeastern LSC Long Course Championships in July, where he earned PBs in the 50 back (27.14) and 50 breast (30.24). He was unable to continue through to his 2022 LCM championship meet, however, because he broke his elbow. In September, he was invited to USA Swimming’s 2022 National Select Camp.

Best SCY times:

  • 100 fly – 47.47
  • 100 back – 48.29
  • 100 breast – 56.71
  • 200 IM – 1:50.43
  • 400 IM – 3:59.53

Nicholas will join Alex Ayers and Harry Belcher in the Cavaliers’ class of 2028.
