SAINT PAUL, Minn. – South Dakota men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams came away with 10 victories on Thursday’s opening day of the three-day Tommie Invitational held inside Anderson Pool on the St. Thomas campus.

The Coyote women won all six finals contested on the opening day while the men’s team had four triumphs and the two teams combined for 17 top three finishes as well as eight new entries into the Coyote Top Ten.

South Dakota women and men both lead the team competition after day one of the four-team invitational as the women have 576 points and the men have 544 points.

Emily DiProsperoTaylor BuhrEmily Kahn and Mady Schmidt earned individual victories for the women while Alex Parkinson and Nick Rounds touched the wall first for the men’s team. Meanwhile, two of the four winning relay quartets moved to the top of the Summit League charts.

DiProspero, a freshman, earned her first individual win in the 500 free this season as her 4:55.32 clocking moved her into third on the school’s all-time charts and up to second in the Summit League.

Buhr, a junior, won the 200 IM where she is the school’s record holder at 2:02.54. She touched the wall in 2:03.96 on Thursday to take over the Summit League lead in a race where the Coyotes swept all four spots in the ‘A’ finals. Gabbie Ahrendt, a sophomore, was second in a personal best 2:04.31 and was followed by junior Grace Schultz in 2:05.06 and freshman Madeline Schrank in 2:07.40.

Ahrendt moved into the Coyote Top Ten chart at third all time while Schultz moved up one spot to seventh and Schrank into 10th all-time. Ahrendt sits second in the Summit League behind Buhr while Schultz is fourth after Thursday’s effort.

Kahn, a senior, two two-time Summit League champion in the 50 free, became the first this season to dip under the 23 second mark with her finals clocking of 22.94. Sara Mayer, a senior, was third in 23.56 while her prelim time of 23.28, a personal best, moved her into the all-time charts at No. 6 and up to third in the Summit League.

Schmidt, a junior, posted a personal best score of 240.80 on the one-meter diving board during the finals to earn her first collegiate victory.

Rounds, a freshman, turned in a pair of personal best 50 free swims on day one as he led off a victorious 200 free relay with a 20.39 split before bettering that with his win in the ‘A’ finals of the 50 free in 20.27. The 20.27 effort is the best in the Summit League this season and ranks fifth on the school’s all-time charts. Joining Rounds on the 200 free relay were Jacob CarlsonJames Schreiber and David Mayer. Schreiber was third in the 50 free final in 20.64 and that ranks third best in the Summit League.

Freshman teammates Parkinson and Will Barth had a pair of duals in the 500 free prelims and finals as Parkinson earned the win in the finals with a 4:29.45 while Barth was third in 4:31.21. Parkinson’s time is the second fastest in school history and tops in the Summit League while Barth sits third all-time and third in the Summit League after Thursday’s effort.

Charlie Matthews, sophomore, placed second in the three-meter diving competition with a score of 255.25 while his prelim effort of 266.20 was a personal best.

Joaquin Contreras-Fallico, a sophomore, swam a personal best 1:52.24 to finish fourth in the 200 IM while his time was good enough to move into seventh on the all-time charts.

The women’s quartet of Kahn, Christina Spomer, Mayer and Sophia Vitela won the 200 free relay in 1:32.66 a new Summit League leading time. The men’s foursome of Adam FisherJack BerdahlJacob Carlson and Rounds also moved to the top of the Summit League in the 400 medley relay, winning in 3:14.04.

Ahrendt led off the winning 400 medley relay and was joined by Buhr, Mayer and Kahn in clocking 3:48.40 while her led off split of 56.20 moved her into seventh on the all-time charts in the 100 back.

A total of 15 finials (eight women, seven men) are on the slate for Friday’s day two which begins with swimming prelims at 10 a.m., women three-meter diving prelims at 1 p.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — South Dakota State recorded a pair of top-three finishes in the relays to open women’s swimming and diving competition Thursday at the Tommie Invitational.

The Jackrabbits began Thursday’s evening session with a third-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Katie PatteeJenna CurrierHannah Miller and Emma Schultz clocked a season-best time of 1 minute, 35.29 seconds.

To wrap up the first of three days at the Anderson Athletics and Recreation Center Pool, the 400 medley relay foursome of Lily Esmas, Miller, Sara Juez and Gigi Hioki combined for a runner-up time of 3:52.60.

Hioki was the top Jackrabbit finisher in an individual event, posting a fourth-place time of 5:03.93 in the 500 freestyle. Poppy Mead finished eighth in 5:08.83.

Jenna Currier and freshman Kailee Crane each turned in fifth-place efforts. Currier touched the wall in 23.62 seconds in the 50 freestyle, while Crane finished fifth in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:07.81. Marissa Branham took seventh in the 200 IM at 2:08.23.

Also earning a berth in an event final was Anna Mae Castro, who placed seventh in 1-meter diving with a score of 196.70 points over six dives.

SDSU stands second among four squads in the team race. South Dakota leads with 576 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 339. Host St. Thomas is third with 303 points, with Green Bay in fourth with 280 points.

Competition resumes Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and event finals at 5:30 p.m.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — South Dakota State’s Austin Smith and Cody Vertin claimed the top two spots in the 200-yard individual medley and Sam Johnson set a school record in the 500 freestyle to highlight the opening day of competition for the Jackrabbit men’s swimming and diving squad Thursday at the Tommie Invitational.

A senior from The Woodlands, Texas, Smith clocked a winning time of 1 minute, 48.88 seconds in the 200 IM during Thursday night’s finals session at the Anderson Athletics and Recreation Center Pool, putting him less than a second off his school-record time of 1:48.06 set in 2023.

Vertin, meanwhile, posted the top time in the event in the morning prelims at 1:50.21, then came back with a personal-best time of 1:49.59 during the evening session for his runner-up finish.

Johnson led a contingent of four Jackrabbits in the top seven of the 500 freestyle with a runner-up finish in his record-setting performance. A senior from Sioux Falls, Johnson turned in a time of 4:29.95 to finish a half-second behind champion Alex Parkinson of South Dakota.

The other top finishers for SDSU in the 500 freestyle were Denilson Cyprianos, fourth, 4:31.50; Jack Ellison, fifth, 4:32.33, and Kolden Kringen, seventh, 4:35.96. Ellison previously held the record with a mark of 4:30.74 set last season.

The trio of Smith, Vertin and Johnson made up three-fourths of the Jackrabbits’ 400 medley relay team, which closed the evening session with a runner-up finish. Teaming with Aiden Carstensen, the SDSU quartet combined for a time of 3:18.95.

Also posting a top-eight finish in an individual event Thursday was senior Charles Sieglaff, who placed seventh in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.98 seconds. Sieglaff swam the lead leg of the Jackrabbits’ third-place 200 freestyle relay, teaming with Carstensen, Liam Murray and Bryan Wong for a time of 1:22.84 to open the finals session.

The Jackrabbits also featured a pair of finalists in 3-meter diving with freshman Seth Berens placing third with a season-best score of 235.35 points for six dives. Oscar Francis took seventh with 211.60 points.

SDSU stands in second place in the four-team race after Day 1. South Dakota leads with 544 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 374. Host St. Thomas is third with 302 points, with Green Bay in fourth with 247 points.

Competition resumes Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and event finals at 5:30 p.m.

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas men’s and women’s swim and dive programs found plenty of success in the pool on the first day of the St. Thomas Invite. Both the men and women finished in third place, scoring over 300 points each in their first invite of the 2024-25 season. The St. Thomas women currently sit in third place behind South Dakota and South Dakota State with a score of 303, while the men are also in third with a score of 302.

WOMEN’S RESULTS:
The Tommies set the tone for the weekend early Thursday, as the St. Thomas “A” team broke the program record in the 200 freestyle relay, the first event of the evening session. The team of Maddie Francois (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell), Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes), Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation) and Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) earned a second place finish in the relay thanks to their time of 1:33.45. The time was also .05 faster than the program record set in 2017 by Tina Molitor, Emma Paulson, Katelyn Strauss and Alex Howard at the MIAC Championships.

Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) claimed the highest finish of any Tommie swimmer on Thursday, as she finished second in the 500 freestyle after qualifying for the “A” finals with a time of 5:01.15. The sophomore was consistent in finals, nearly repeating her prelim performance to finish second with a time of 5:01.31. Six different St. Thomas swimmers qualified for “C” finals to earn top-20 finishes, including Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South), Jin-Jae Robinson (Galena, Ohio / Olentangy Berlin), Ashley Plantenberg (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie), Gwen Moore (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) and Megan Toal (San Clemente, Calif. / San Juan Hills).

Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic) was the Tommies top performer in the 200 IM, earning a ninth place finish with a time of 2:09.53. Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler) and Kathryn Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Visitation) finished 12-13, while Madison Parkin (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) and Willow Larson (Fairfield, Iowa / Fairfield) earned top-18 finishes as well.

Undem’s impressive performance in the 200 freestyle relay carried over to the 50 free. The first year clocked the fourth fastest time in prelims to earn her spot in the “A” finals. She would ultimately finish in fourth thanks to a time of 23.78. Teammates Francois and Fischer both qualified for “B” finals, while Forsberg earned a place in the “C” finals.

The St. Thomas “B” team was the top finisher in the 400 relay. The team of Forsberg, Plantenberg, Lily Linden (Rochester, Minn. / Century) and Francois finished in seventh thanks to a season best time of 3:55.68.

Hattie Opdahl (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) finished second in the 1-meter fiving competition with a six-dive score of 211.30. Zoey Johnson (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) finished fourth with a score of 207.75 in finals, just .05 shy of her career best.

UP NEXT
Thanks to these and several other performances, St. Thomas sits in third place as a team with 303 points. The Tommies will resume action at the St. Thomas Invite as day two is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Green Bay swimming and diving teams dove back into action Thursday night, beginning a three-day invite hosted by the St. Thomas Tommies.

Rachel Everson and Annie Frederickson did well on the one-meter board, with the former placing third with a score of 210.05, while the latter took fifth with a score of 199.60. Emily Allen was second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.35.

DAY 1 RESULTS

Andy Groebner placed fifth in the men’s three-meter event, totaling a score of 232.70. Max Kasal and Ethan Braatz highlighted some of the other men’s performances of the night. Kasal came close to the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle, taking second with a time of 20.50. His counterpart in Braatz took fourth with a time of 21.16. In the men’s 200-yard IM, Chris Aristondo took fifth with a time of 1:51.05.

The St. Thomas Invite resumes tomorrow with finals action beginning at 5:30 pm central time.
