If you thought the fast swimming was done for the year after the World Short Course Championships, think again.
Italian swimmer Silvia di Pietro returned home from Melbourne to compete at the 2022 Coppa Brema Trophy in Lazio, setting a new Italian Record in the 50 short course meters freestyle.
She won the race in 23.83, which broke her own National Record of 23.85 set in this same pool at a similar regional meet.
Di Pietro also won the 100 free in 52.75, missing Federica Pellegrini’s Italian Record of 52.10 – also set in the Brema Cup competition.
The Coppa Brema Trophy is a regional team competition that feeds into a bigger national competition. The top teams in each region advance to a national championship event in April in Riccione, which will be held the day after the Italian Championships in Riccione. While those Italian championships are in long course, the Brema Trophy the next day will be run in short course meters.
Di Pietro swims for the Aniene/Carabinieri Rowing Club coached by Mirko Nozzolillo. The club finished 1st in the meet with 13,532 points.
Di Pietro came down with a bad case of the flu at the World Championships, but still managed to muster the energy for a new National Record here. In Melbourne, she finished 13th in the 50 fly (25.42 in the semifinals), the fly leg of Italy’s women’s 200 medley relay (24.99 split), and won a silver medal on the fly leg of Italy’s mixed 200 medley relay (24.52), which set a new European Record in the process.
This was one of several Brema Cup meets run around the country. World Record holder Thomas Ceccon competed in a meet in Veneto (Verona), where he swam 50.57 in the 100 back individual event and 50.44 leading off a men’s 400 medley relay. He also swam 1:53.24 in the 200 backstroke and 1:54.36 in the 200 IM.
