Sarah Barton Leads Nebraska To Victory Over Iowa State

Six Husker swimmers claimed titles as Nebraska capped its weekend with a 167-132 dual win over Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Saturday.

Sarah Barton raced to three titles and 27 points for the Huskers. The senior took first in the 200 butterfly (2:03.02), the 200 backstroke (2:03.64) and the 200 IM (2:07.61).

Gena Jorgenson also captured two titles, one in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.79) and one in the 500 freestyle (4:59.84). The sophomore added a second-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.11, while teaming with Lexi Kucera, Emily Haimes and Giulia Marchi for a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

JoJo Randby contributed an individual title with her win in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.65). Maia Hall added a second-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.62, while Randby added two second-place finishes of her own on the day.

Haimes placed second in the 100 freestyle (52.76) and third in the 50 freestyle (24.28), while contributing to two runner-up relays for the Huskers. Marchi earned a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle (1:52.94) and a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.10).

Beatrix Tanko continued her stellar freshman campaign with a title in the 100 butterfly (56.48). Kucera finished second in the race (57.80) and Caitlin Cairns came in third (58.27). 

Husker freshmen Abby Baxter and Antonina Harned captured first and second-place in both the one-meter and three-meter dives, respectively. Baxter posted NCAA-qualifying scores of 301.25 on the one-meter and 300.85 on the three-meter. Harned followed closely with NCAA-qualifying scores a 284.85 on the one-meter and a 290.55 on the three-meter.

Iowa State was led by junior Carley Caughron, who claimed three first-place individual titles for the Cyclones and contributed to one winning relay. She teamed up with Brinley Horras, Maddie Ziegert and Andie Quirke for the win in the 400 freestyle relay. Horras added a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:52.19) and a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:02.80).

The Huskers return home for a dual with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) fell to Nebraska (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) by a score of 162-137 to start the 2023-24 season.

The Cyclones started the day strong winning the 200 Medley Relay with a score of 1:45.26 from Emma KuhnPaige HanleyCarley Caughron, and Lydia McClugage finishing over a second before the second-place finishing Nebraska team.

Corinne Guist placed second in the 1000 Free at a time of 10:30.65 while Sydney finished in third with a time of 10:33.06

Fallon DeWitt picked up her first win of the season beating out Nebraska’s Giulia Marchi by less than one second with a time of 1:52.19. DeWitt followed that up with a second-place finish in the 200 yard Backstroke.

Carley Caughron had a strong open to her junior year winning the 50 free with a 23.78 finish. Caughron followed that up with a first-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 51.86.

“She’s put in a lot of work to get to the position she is in and she is due for the type of swims we saw today and hopefully a breakout year.” head coach Duane Sorenson said.

The Cyclones took each of the top-three spots in the 100 Backstroke with the freshman Kuhn (58.02) in first, Ziegert (58.35) in second, and Madi Dohrn (58.46) rounding out the top three.

Alaina Breitbach had two top-three finishes against Nebraska coming in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events.

Brinley Horras started her senior campaign with a second-place finish in the 500 free with a 5:02.80 finish. Guist finished in third place with a 5:08.52 finish.

In diving, Lauren Kimball competed in her first meet since a season-ending injury kept her from competing in most of 2022, finishing in third in the 3-meter with a 276.45 score. “It’s amazing to watch her because she has been out for so long and she has come back so fast.” head diving coach Jeff Warwick said. “She might be diving better than I have ever seen before.” Kate Mitchell finished her 3-meter performance in fourth with a score of 255.25.

“I thought the team looked ready to go this week. We just got to smooth out some things but I think they are on the right track.” coach Warwick said.

Iowa State finished the day winning the 400 free relay with a team of Guist, McClugage, Dohrn, and Jackson finishing with a time of 3:30.55.

“The nice thing about early meets is we get to see what is working and what our glaring problems are that we need to fix.” Sorenson said.

Iowa State will travel to South Dakota to take on the Coyotes on Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.
