Saint Anthony senior Noah Cakir, an Indiana signee, won two individual events and was a part of two winning relay teams. He won the won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:46.51 and the 100 breaststroke in a time of 53.35. His personal best in the 200 IM is 1:45.27 and 53.29 in the breaststroke.
The other individual standout was Archbishop Molloy senior and Georgia signee Sean Green, who won the 200 free in a time of 1:35.48 and the 500 free in a time of 4:17.44. His personal bests are 1:34.86 in the 200 free and 4:16.78 in the 500 free.
Two close relay finishes helped propel Saint Anthony’s to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Federation title earlier this month.
Saint Anthony’s team of Lorenzo Aquilino, Cakir, Keanne Hernandez and James Augustin first set a state record in the 200 medley relay, coming in with a time of 1:31.03. Saint Anthony’s came in just .25 one-hundredths ahead of second-place Frewsburg.
The 400 freestyle relay also came down to the wire, with the same Saint Anthony’s quartet but different order of Augustin, Hernandez, Aquilino and Cakir winning in a time of 3:04.64.
Frewsburg was only .09 one-hundredths behind in second.
Those two relay wins helped Saint Anthony’s win the overall meet with 191 points, 17 ahead of Frewsburg.
The Federation includes athletes from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, New York City’s Public Schools Athletic League, the Catholic High School Athletic Association and the Association of Independent Schools.
The 200 free relay was won by Frewsburg’s team of Conner Dean, Daniel Peterson, Grady Moore and Miles Moore in a time of 1:23.85.
Other individual winners were:
- Guilder-Voorhees senior Isak Brkanovic became the first swimmer from his school to win a state title when he won the 50 free in a personal-best time of 20.52. Brkanovic is a Towson signee.
- Suffern Senior’s Luke Leale, a senior, improved on a second-place finish last year in the diving event by winning this year with 570.40 points.
- Hoosic Valley junior Christian Jerome won the 100 fly in a personal-best time of 48.04. He was runner-up last year.
- Williamsville South junior Carter Kobielski won the 100 free in a personal-best time of 45.15, improving drastically from a 22nd-place finish last year.
- Clarkston Co-Op junior Isaih Francis repeated as champion in the 100 back, finishing in a personal-best time of 48.59. It was a 1.12 second improvement from his previous best time.
