While competing on day 2 prelims of the 2017 British Swimming Championships the fastest breaststroker ever, Adam Peaty, got the job done in the 50m event to claim the top seed. He already nabbed the gold last night in the 100m distance, firing off a wicked-fast 57.79 to clear the 58 second mark for the 4th fastest time in history, and the 22-year-old Olympic champion scorched another history-maker in the breaststroke splash n’ dash.
This morning in the final heat of the 50m, Peaty raced to a top seeded time of 26.62 to tie South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh with the 4th fastest time ever in that event. The Loughborough athlete already holds the top 3 efforts, which stand at 26.42, 26.51, and 26.61, so Peaty is already within .2 of a second from his world record.
Top 5 male 50m breaststroke times ever:
- Adam Peaty, 26.42, Kazan 2015 (semi)
- Adam Peaty, 26.51, Kazan 2015 (final)
- Adam Peaty, 26.61, Brazil, 2016
- Adam Peaty (Sheffield, 2017) and Cameron van der Burgh, Kazan 2015
- Cameron van der Burgh, Kazan 2015 (final)
Below is race video provided by British Swimming‘s Twitter account, Peaty is in lane 4 and handily touches the wall first.

I know it’s partly a trick of camera/perspective but it does look like he just keeps getting faster as he finishes. Remarkable.
