CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Head coach Jeff Dugdale welcomed Wingate into the Levine Center, a squad led by Dugdale’s best man Kirk Sanocki, setting up for a fun rivalry against the crosstown Bulldogs.
Both Queens men’s and women’s squads earned their second-consecutive victories. The men’s squad won 159-86, while the women’s squad came out on top 139-106. Of today’s successes, Queens took first in 21 of the 26 events.
Caroline Lawrence got things started with a victory in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 26.47. Monica Gumina was right behind her in second at 26.66. The men’s side took each of the top-three spots in the same event, led by Alexander Bauch.
Both sides enjoyed victories in the 50-yard breaststroke as well, with Annika Huber (29.80) and Jan Delkeskamp (25.59) each earning first-place finishes.
In the 50 fly, Matej Dusa swam away from the competition, finishing at a speedy 21.97.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, Rebecca Dany finished took first, nearly finishing five seconds ahead of the next finisher at 10:25.13.
Monica Gumina zoomed to an impressive victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.99. Daniel Meszaros followed suit with an impressive time of his own, coming in at 1:39.93.
In the 50-yard dash, Queens were able to touch the wall first on both sides, with Danielle Melilli (23.61) and Matej Dusa (20.11) earning nine points for the Royals.
Huber and Delkeskamp earned their second victories of the day in the 100-yard IM with times of 59.28 and 50.75, respectively.
Alex Kunert joined the scoring party in the 100-yard butterfly with a first-place time of 49.34. Shortly after, Dusa continued his success on the day with a third victory, this time in the 100-yard freestyle (44.73).
In the second distance event of the evening, the 500-yard freestyle, Dany once again took gold finishing at 5:08.85.
Huber and Delkeskamp, like Dusa, also ended the day with victories in three individual events, taking gold in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:04.83 and 55.76, respectively.
In the final event of the evening, the 800-yard freestyle relay, Queens capped off the day with a pair of victories.
Danielle Melilli, Monica Gumina, Giulia Grasso, and Rebecca Dany bolted to a time of 7:40.65, 10 seconds ahead of the next finishing group.
Daniel Meszaros, Alex Kunert, Balazs Berecz, and Luke Erwee posted an equally impressive time on the men’s side, finishing at 6:43.10.
The Royals return to the Levine Center tomorrow, October 8, to take on Emory at 11 AM.

Charlotte, N.C.—-In a clash of NCAA swimming titans, Queens University of Charlotte swept a dual meet over Wingate University at the Levine Center Friday evening. On the women’s side, the host Royals prevailed 139-106. The Queens men outdistanced visiting Wingate 159-86. The contests opened the season for the South Atlantic Conference member Bulldogs.
Junior team captain Hana Kubalova (women’s 50 and 100 Butterfly) and sophomore Miguel Marcos (men’s 500 and 1000 Freestyle) won two events each. Marcos and classmate Kelsea Munro (50 and 100 Freestyle) posted two NCAA Division II B cuts each.
Sophomore transfer Marta Beesmans Barquero and freshman Ney Chagas Filho celebrated their inaugural appearances in the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold in style, winning the women’s and the men’s 100 Backstroke, respectively. On the evening, the Wingate women collected 18 medals with the aforementioned three golds. The Bulldog men amassed 14 medals, matching their female counterparts with three golds.

Although it was a different combination of events raced this week, I think that we as a team rose to the occasion and displayed some great racing. I also swam some different events than I would usually swim, but for where we are in the season right now, with the practice intensity that we’ve had, the races were decent.”

“Queens was the perfect meet to kick off the season because our team is always challenged and they push us to give our best! It was fun swimming the 100 IM since I have not swum this event since I was much younger. The 800 Freestyle Relay is always a tough, but fun race. Relays are always my favorite. I enjoy swimming, having my teammates with me. This next weekend, we’ll be traveling to Ohio for our first invitational of the season. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
