Purdue Dominates Duels with Notre Dame

The Boilermakers took down the Fighting Irish Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame’s Rolfs Aquatic Center, thanks to a number of multiple-event winners on both the men’s and women’s sides. Despite a 170 to 128 loss, the Notre Dame women were able to take home six event wins and  get close to a pool record. The Purdue men took down Notre Dame 161 to 139.

The Fighting Irish kicked off the meet with wins from both their men’s (1:30.72) and women’s (1:42.16) A Teams in the 200 Medley Relay. Purdue’s women followed up for second in 1:43.54, while the men took second in 1:31.20.

Freshman Boilermaker Kaersten Meitz got the first of her two wins in the 1000 Free (9:55.65), leading a Purdue 1-2-3 sweep of the event. Junior teammate Nika Petric took second (10.02.43) and Boilermaker Junior Lizzy Lyon touched third (10:12.20). Purdue’s Joshua Brooks brought home the win for the men in the even (9:25.38) ahead of Notre Dame’s Kevin Bradley (9:31.97).

The Purdue women continued their domination with another 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 Free. Freshman Boilermaker Abby Jagdfeld led the pack (1:49.78).  Purdue’s Alexa Davis followed up for second (1:50.26) and 1000 Champion Kaersten Mietz swam back-to-back events and still clinched third (1:51.19). On the men’s side, Purdue’s Joshua Ehrman (1:40.45) out-touched Notre Dame’s Trent Jackson (1:40.50) by just five one-hundredths of a second.

After contributing the backstroke leg for the winning 200 Medley Relay, Notre Dame Sophomore Catherine Mulquin (55.98) touched almost two seconds ahead of Purdue’s Hannah Manger (57.78) for the win in the 100 Back. Junior Bogac Ayhan kept the wins rolling for Notre Dame with a first in the men’s 100 Back (50.16) ahead of Purdue’s Alex Toetz (50.50).

The event wins for the Fighting Irish kept coming as Notre Dame’s Emma Reaney took her first win of the meet in the 100 Breast (1:00.90), getting close to her own pool record she previously set in Janauary of last year. Reaney was over three seconds ahead of Sophomore teammate Danielle Margheret (1:04.01). Teammate Genevieve Bradford took third (1:04.47) to complete a 1-2-3 Notre Dame sweep. Purdue’s Lyam Dias (55.09) led the field in the men’s 100 Breast ahead of Notre Dame’s Cameron Miller (55.53) and Patrick Olson (56.81).

The Purdue freshmen women shined again as Meagan Lim took first in the 200 Fly (2:00.94) just ahead of teammate Rihannon Sheets (2:01.87). Notre Dame responded with a win in the men’s 200 Fly from John Williamson (1:48.26).  Purdue followed up with 2-3 finishes with Daniel Conway (1:48.58) and Guillermo Blanco (1:49.77).

Senior Boilermaker Kylie Vogel (23.58) touched just ahead of Notre Dame’s Mulquin (23.69) in the 50 Free. For the men, Notre Dame’s Zachary Stephens (21.04) led a 1-2 sweep of the 50 and touched just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of teammate Justin Plaschka (21.05). The top three finishes were tight, as Purdue’s Stephen Seliskar took third with a 21.06, one one-hundredth behind Plaschka.

Purdue’s Mary Beth Dunnichay (315.15) and Jamie Bissett (359.62) brought home wins in the 1-meter platform for the Boilermaker women and men, respectively.

Jagdfeld picked up her second win of the meet in the 100 Free (51.10), just three-tenths of a second ahead of Notre Dame teammates Cat Galletti (51.46) and multi-event extraordinaire Mulquin (51.48). Purdue’s Ehman got his second win of the meet in the men’s 100 Free (45.91) ahead of teammate Joshua Brooks (46.25).

Boilermaker Hannah Manger led a pair of Notre Dame swimmers with a 2:03.57 for first in the 200 Back. Notre Dame’s Courtney Whyte (2:04.06) took second while her teammate Katie Miller (2:04.71) took third. Purdue 400 IM record holder and Senior Guillermo Blanco took the 200 Back for the men (1:50.20) ahead of Notre Dame’s Tom Anderson (1:51.04).

Notre Dame’s Reaney completed a sweep of the Breaststroke events with a win in the 200 Breast (2:14.16) ahead of Purdue’s Francesca Marr (2:16.67). 50 Free Champ Stevens picked up his second win in the 200 Breaststroke (1:59.68) ahead of 100 Breast Champ Dias (1:59.95).

Purdue Freshman Kaersten Meitz brought in her second win in the 500 Free (4:51.35), touching just over two tenths of a second ahead of Notre Dame’s Alexa Davis (4:51.59). The 500 Free was a close race for the men as well, with Notre Dame’s Benjamin Jany (4:35.66) touching less than a second ahead of Purdue’s Nathan Hopkins (4:36.29).

Boilermaker Freshman Meagan Lim finished her sweep of the Butterfly events by touching first in the 100 Fly (55.12), just one tenth of a second ahead of teammate and 50 Free Champ Kylie Vogel (55.22). This was a meet of close races, as Purdue’s Stephen Seliskar (49.35) edged out Notre Dame’s John Williamson (49.36) by just one one-hundredth of a second.

Purdue diver Jamie Bissett swept the platform events, scoring 408.82 points in the 3-meter. Notre Dame’s Lindsey Streepy (313.28) took home the win in the women’s 3-meter.

Purdue Junior Nika Petric led another 1-2-3 Boilermaker sweep in the 400 IM (4:21.48) ahead of teammates Francesca Marr (4:26.18) and Junior Madison Monteiro (4:26.76). Guillermo Blanco got his second meet win in the men’s 200 IM (1:48.46), touching five one-hundredths of a second ahead of Notre Dame’s Zachary Stephens (1:48.51).

With exhibitions starting in the final event of the meet for the women, the Fighting Irish’s A Team took home the win in the 200 Free Relay (1:39.68). The men swam the 400 Free Relay, and Purdue’s A Team touched first (3:04.59) ahead of Notre Dame’s A (3:04.74) in another close race.
