Plantation Sectionals Day 1: Yeziel Morales Swims 8:13.8, Hits 800 FR LTB

2020 Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

On Thursday, the 2020 SZSS Sectionals kicked off in Plantation, FL with the timed finals of the women’s 1500 free, men’s 800 free, the men’s and women’s 200 medley/200 free relays, and the mixed 200 medley/200 free relays.

The men’s 800 free top heat started off with 15-year-old Joshua Parent of Bluefish holding a slight lead on 24-year-old Yeziel Morales of Azura. At the 600-meter mark, however, Morales caught Parent, pacing off him for 100 meters until he pulled away with 200 meters to go.

At the finish it was Puerto Rican record-holder Morales, touching in at 8:13.84, taking down his 2015 LTB. The Olympic “B” qualifying time is 8:08.54. Morales already has swum under the 200 back B cut (2:01.03) with a 2:00.27 from 2019 Pan Ams. The 2020 US Olympic Trials cut is 8:12.99.

Parent finished second in 8:14.72, just off his 8:14.31 seed time. Another Azura swimmer, 18-year-old Joaquin Vargas, touched in at 8:16.26 for third.

The evening’s first champion was 18-year-old Leah Degeorge of Bolles School, who dominated the 1500 free timed finals with her top time of 17:00.79. Roughly 24 seconds later, 16-year-old Mallory Schleicher of South Florida clocked in a 17:24.45. Coming in for third place was 17-year-old Anna Hein of Bluefish at 17:33.69.
