Through the 3rd day of the 2025 MAC Championships, 3-time defending champions Akron are still holding onto the lead. Ohio had a great day 3, however, and is still close enough that they could make it a battle on the final day of the meet.
Akron concluded the session with a pool record in the 200 free relay, where they also narrowly missed the NCAA ‘A’ time standard. Abby Daniel (22.39), Adrianna Szwabinska (22.03), Aislinn Holder (21.98), and Hannah Trainer (22.22) combined for a 1:28.62, blowing away the pool record of 1:29.39, which Akron set back in 2020. They narrowly missed the ‘A’ cut of 1:28.42, and were even closer to the conference record, which stands at 1:28.54, set by an Akron team in 2019.
Prior to helping the relay to victory, Abby Daniel ripped a 51.67 to win the 100 fly, setting a new pool record in the process. Her swim marked a season best, but was just off her own conference record mark of 51.31 that she set in 2023. Of note, Akron freshman Felicia Klintemar came in 2nd with a 52.30, so it would appear that the Zips will be in good hands once Daniel graduates this spring.
After Daniel brought Akron gold in the first event of the session, Ohio then went on a tear, winning the next 3 events. Gabby McKee took the 400 IM in 4:16.17, touching out Buffalo freshman Bella Forsman, who swam a 4:16.60.
Ohio sophomore Zita Szoke then cracked the championship record in the 200 free, swimming a very speedy 1:44.74. The performance marks a new program record for the Bobcats and puts her within striking distance of the conference record, which stands at 1:43.90.
Following Szoke’s win, Ohio junior Casadie DiBetta clocked a 59.81 to win the 100 breast, breaking the pool record in the process. She was in control of the race from start to finish, putting up the fastest split in the field on both 50s.
Miami (OH) then found their way to the top of the podium, seeing Madeline Padavic clock a 51.52 to win the 100 back. She broke the pool and championship records with the performance, and fell just short of her own conference record, which stands at 51.33 from earlier thus year.
Way to go Bobcats!
