Men-
VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of North Dakota men’s swimming and diving team picked up a weekend split against South Dakota State and South Dakota.
On Friday, South Dakota State defeated the Fighting Hawks 161-139.
“This is a tough loss for us,” said UND head coach Chris Maiello. “Give credit to SDSU for being ready to compete from start to finish.”
Jacob Wielinski continued his hot start to his collegiate career by grabbing the victory in the 1650-free by over 31 seconds with a time of 15:57.02. Wielinski then went on to win the 500-free with a time of 4:45.03 and the 200 IM at 1:57.47 over teammate Sam Marlow (1:57.73).
Marlow also picked up a victory for UND in the 100-back (53.32); while Matt Koken picked up two victories in the 200-fly (1:56.14) and 100-fly (51.68).
However, every time UND seemed to have grabbed momentum following an event, SDSU was able to grab it right back.
“We did not get it done tonight as a group,” said Maiello. “For every event we could gain points the next event they came right back.”
Following the tough loss to South Dakota State, UND turned its attention to the Coyotes of South Dakota on Saturday.
The Fighting Hawks were able to regroup and pick up a 139-98 win over USD.
“Overall this was a nice bounce back meet for us,” said Maiello. “The team came together and rallied around each other today. It was great to see this attitude considering how the meets went last night”
Sam Marlow set a pool record in the 200-back with a time of 2:06.19, winning by over five seconds.
“I think the men’s meet was highlighted by Sam Marlow‘s pool record in the 200 backstroke,” said Maiello on Marlow’s performance. “He is training well and his results are improving.”
Jacob Wielinski kept his weekend rolling in victory lane by winning three events on Saturday.
Wielinski won the 200-free (1:56.06), 200 IM (2:10.36), and 400-free (4:05.32) to lead the Fighting Hawks to its third dual win of the season.
“Jacob Wielinski also had three victories, as he continues to pile up the dual meet victories,” said Maiello.
UND closes out its dual season at 3-3 and will head to Iowa for the Hawkeye Invite on Dec. 4.

VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of North Dakota women’s swimming and diving team completed a weekend sweep of South Dakota State and South Dakota.
On Friday, UND traveled to Brookings to battle South Dakota State; where the Fighting Hawks picked up a 194-106 win.
“The women did what was needed tonight,” said UND head coach Chris Maiello on Friday’s meet. “It was not the best performances we have had all season across the board.”
UND got the meet started off right by claiming the first event of the dual, the 400-yard relay. The team ofMaddie Derby, Steph Frey, Danica Dutt, and Marlena Pigliacampi claimed the win with a time of 3:54.68, winning by over three seconds.

“In a difficult enviorment, they did what they needed to do for the win,” said Maiello. “Double wins for Liedy and Frey were key but Derby led the way with three individual wins and a relay win.”
On Saturday, the Fighting Hawks carried their momentum into Vermillion to down the Coyotes, 132-106.

DiMeo was also front-and-center in the 200-fly when she set a pool record with a time of 2:22.34.
“Gracie Dimeo’s pool record in the 200 fly was fun to watch,” said Maiello. “Visually that was her best 200 all season. She had control of her technique, speed and tempo. I am happy for her.”
Gaby Liedy also picked up her third win of the weekend by claiming the 800-free with a time of 9:27.62.
Ali Schwab (27.19) was able to barely out-touch teammate Courtney Funk (27.55) in the 50-free for a win.
